An idealist (like Blair) and he will have a deal with Gordon Brown (the Wolf), but better than the Merchants and Thieves (Cameron). It won't last long as Brown will get rest of the Wolfpack to gang up on Cleggie. It would be best if Mandelson shut his mouth and let Glenys do any diplomacy. :US:

Would love it to work. A government with more than 50% of the popular vote certainly has some sort of legitimacy - more at least than one with only some 30%.

Regrettably, in terms of likelihood, the prospect of any politicians being able to sublimate personal self interest in favour of the greater public good probably rates up there with Cinderella's sisters welcoming her to the ball.

I did not read it that way. I read it that he is just putting a spoke (Beaver-like) in Gordon Brown's dogmatic stream of thought, so when they form a coalition with Labour, Cleggy does not get bullied.

Recent History
When did we last have one?
In 1974 the electorate returned a hung Parliament and Ted Heath was forced to resign after failing to secure a coalition with the Liberal Democrats. Labour formed a minority government but in 1977 James Callaghan was forced to form a coalition government with the Liberal Democrats to avoid a No Confidence vote, which ran for 16 months. Liberal MPs supported the government in key votes in return for regular consultation but limited influence over its policy and legislation.

Cleggy knows this, of course. And so does Brown.
