Who is your historical hero?

Norman Borlaug, doesn't get the credit he deserves.

Interesting thread, especially with people such as this that I had never heard of until now.

Several of mine have been mentioned, Alan Turing and Brunel in particular. Sir Ludwig Guttman has deservedly earned a higher profile due to the Olympics - I had never heard of him until recently.

Harry Cowley. Local man who stood up for the people living in the slums in Brighton. Would make a great 500 word essay. Harry lived in the (what is now) Hanover district of Brighton, wonder what the hell he'd think of the area now!!

How people can think Ghandi is a hero is ridiculous. He may have 'freed' his Country but for what? Poverty and Corruption? India was much better off under British Imperialism.

Is there even the smallest shred of truth in any of that??

It came from my old history teacher, so I'd hope so! Hitler was a really strange person in a lot of ways (aside from the obvious). I always found it ironic that he gassed millions of jews, but was a vegetarian.

I think you have been listening to too many chinese whispers and myths. Hitler was not a vegetarian. In fact he often professed his love for game pie and bovarian sausage and his chef talked often of Hitler's love for stuffed pigeon. Hitler also used to inject Bulls semen. He was sometimes oredered by his physician to go on a vegetarian diet to aid his digestion, which he had a problem with.

As for that atrology bollocks your history teacher came out with I despair... Churchill was a great War Prime Minister because he was able to stand up to a bully by bluff, aggression and an uncanny forsight.
