Vitruvius. Solid, useful and beautiful.

Architectural genius and put down the measurements for da Vinci's Vetruvian Man. Also gave us Archimedes 'Eureka' story.

Harveyious Maximus- Alcoholic Roman and always croaking on about how great Roman ale is compared to that awful Christian brew that they also sell at the Colosseum.

He's fairly ancient so I think he counts, Sergio Leone.

Octavian/Augustus:

Manage to defeat Mark Antony and establish himself as the first emperor. He brought peace and stability after decades of civil unrest and civil war which led to the collapse of the Republic. I think he married his sister... which is a bit odd.

Publius Cornelius Scipio Africanus (236 - 186 BC)

- Saved his father's life at 18 "by charging the encircling force with reckless daring"
- Threatened Roman politicians at sword point to never surrender
- Beat Hannibal and his war elephants at Zama despite being heavily outnumbered
- Never lost a battle in his career

Pontius Pilate he knew how to make a decision.

Great choice. The decision he took over the fate of Jesus is up there with Alex Ferguson's decision to sell Beckham. Ultimately he made the right choice but I'm sure he must have had moments of self doubt afterwards. From all accounts he was a really nice guy too, the kind of chap you'd be proud to call a friend. Wonderful man.

Publius Quinctilius Varus.

For showing that even 3 imperial Roman legions can be defeated by a comparatively disorganised army if you fight to your strengths and don't let them fight to theirs.
