We now have a united board, a ground that holds the same as the attendances we were getting at The Goldstone and supporters who back the board 100%

That 100% include you, BG? :lolol: Wonders will never cease.

Until we have our own ground that can generate some revenue rather than haemorrhage money like our rented athletics crapheap, for these significant infrastructural/financial reasons alone, we are not better off than we were then, but one day, perhaps very soon, we will be, depending on how well we manage the challenges of the stadium financing.............

Jeff Wood. Keith McPherson. Nuff sed.

Keith McPherson was a good defender for us as I remember, admittedly we were in the lower reaches of the football league but I thought he was very able for us at that level.

Id go for Barry Lloyd as the best player buyer, getting John Byrne & Mickey Small was a master stroke. There were loads more as well.

A special mention has to go to Brian Horton who got Paul Holsgrove on a free then sold him 2 days later for £130k.

Is there a website where you can check the buying history of each manager??

The club were forced to accept this offer by their bank

At the time Barclays Bank (to whom we had re-mortgaged the Goldstone) were trying to get us to pay our bills with them. In the end we had pissed them about so much that they demanded an immediate payment of £50,000 to settle the most outstanding part of our debts or they would lockus out of the ground. We did not have 50k in cash. When the club told Barclays this, Barclays went ape and demanded /asked BHA if there were any offers on players that could be realised quickly. It so happened that Mark Lawrenson (who was then manager at Oxford) had put in a not very serious 50k bid/enquiry in for Dean Saunders (i understood that this was very much an opening bid) . Howvever when Barclays got to hear that there was an un-realised bid of £50k against one of our players, they told the club to do the deal there and then regardless and send them the money

Thanks for that. Just how long were the finances of this club so scandalously bad?

Must admit I was young and naiive when Lloyd was in charge and the animosity towards him from sections of the crowd mystified me at the time, especially as we were heading for Wembley. Was it tactics? The fact that he wasn't a big name manager/came from Worthing Town? Poor relationship with the players(Gary Nelson's autobiog bit about being dropped for Wembley sticks in the mind)? The blue suit jacket that was so old it was shiny? The fag smoking? Transfer dealings?

I too was a youngster when Lloyd was manager. I must admit that my initial dislike of him was more than a little influenced by my dad's dislile of him and the continual abuse aimed at him from the stands.

My dad was rather cruel really becasue he assured me that Brighton were a BIG club who only a few yers ago were in the top flight and F.A cup finalists. This for some reason made me assume that our natural status was something similar to that of Liverpool. Thus seeing the albion playing longball football and scrabbling around in the lower reaches of division 2 made me think that Bazza was crap. Plus everyone was always talking about Cattlin and Mullery and how we played much better football under them than we did under Lloyd. Sadly his good points (i.e the players he signed) were lost on me.

One thing that did genuinely annoy me though, was his seem, ing refusal to make substituions. Many times we would be playing badly, or struggling. The obvious thing to do would be to bring on the substitute but the more the crowd called for it, the longer LLoyd would refuse to do it. Strange.

Anyway, I have to admit, the more I find out about the constraints he was working under, the more I change my negative view of him. Garry Nelsons biography does make me dislike him for his treating of GN though.

What a load of old bollocks Barclays could not have locked us out of the Goldstone without a possession order obtained from a court a very lengthy process. Or are you suggesting Barclays Bank threatened an Illegal eviction. However it is true that Saunders was sold to pay wages after the PFA pulled the plug after stepping in for the previous few months.

Barry Lloyd by a country mile. he got the likes of Nogan for nothing. On the other hand Mullery may have got Foster, Lawrenceson and Williams on the cheap but he spent a fortune on Maybank and Sayer neither of whom lived up to their prices and he's also got rid of Peter Ward for Andy Ritchie who just was't interested for much of his stay here.

You are talking about "we" the club are not better off, as opposed to any current manager compared to Lloyd. Lloyd inherited a disunited board, digruntled fans, a relegated team and dressing room discontent thanks to no wage structure whatsoever. I'd say McGhee has it MUCH easier than Lloyd. Most people (understandably) consider 4th from bottom a success in the current circumstances.

Chris Cattlin wasnt bad either.
In terms of wheeler dealing we have had some great manager but then you need the bad ones to apprciate the good
He's my vote. Dean Saunders, Danny Wilson, Steve Penney, Martin Keown (on loan). Every single one of those went on to play in teams that won PROPER trophies. And how many duds did he bring in? Not many. Willie Young maybe? ???

Edit: Penney didn't, but did play at the World Cup.
