It is an acknowledged fact that Jack Charlton started by playing players whose grandmothers etc distance removed made them elligible France have done the same with African colonies that were once under French rule. We have done the same in cricket with South Africans especially but does that make it right.

The rules are extremely clear, you need to qualify for a passport - this was clarified after a Northern Irish player who qualified for one under the Good Friday Agreement declared for Ireland.

That means you need an Irish citizen parent or grandparent. Thats it. Some of the "non Irish" players who've played or play for us would have been declared to the foreign births registry and received Irish citizenship from the off - Kevin Kilbane for one.

England could do much the same, if it wanted or needed to. And good jesus, Ireland abuses the cricket rules obscenely.... at lest half of the first selection aren't "Irish" by any sense of the word!

If I found my grandmother I could become Irish :clap2:

Which one has the most genuine players that are either French or Irish by birthright and not by some obscure rule about relatives and ancestors.

Republic of Ireland team for tomorrow:
Given - Born in Donegal
O'Shea - Waterford
Dunne - Dublin
*St Ledger - Birmingham (grandfather from Carlow)
*Kilbane - Preston (Irish parents)
Duff - Dublin
Andrews - Dublin
Whelan - Dublin
*Lawrence or McGeady (Retford, Glasgow - both Irish Parents)
Keane - Dublin,
Doyle - Wexford.

St Ledger is the only one on the Grandparents rule, but 5 out of 11 were born in the Countries capital city, which sounds a convincing stat.

France for me. Too many weak sides in the World Cup as it is (e.g. New Zealand or Bahrain, and many others).

Ireland. Lots of Irish mates.

Saying that, I have mates from other countries that I want to see lose, because we're friends.

any Bretons in the French side?

Yoann Gourcuff is a Breton - his dad manages Lorient.

French team:

Lloris - from Nice
Sagna - born in Burgundy
Gallas - born in Paris
Squillaci - from Toulon
Evra - born in Senegal
Diarra A. - born in Paris
Diarra L. - born in Paris
Anelka - born in Versailles
Gourcuff - from Brittany
Henry - born in Paris
Gignac - from near Marseille

So, only one of the French team was born outside of France. If you compare that to Portugal, I think the French team comes out quite well.
