Our milkman drives a diesel powered float. It's only a problem in the summer when we have our windows open overnight. It's a noisy bastard.

We do but the round has changed hands 3 times in the last 5 years. I do wonder whether people can't hack the early starts. I'd be sorry to see it stop. My Gran who lived down Plumpton Lane used to get almost everything delivered, but now (unless you shop for groceries off the Internet of course) I suppose its mostly just Milk & Papers.

Oh, there is still a coalman round here but that must be a dying business; I'd have thought.

Anyone here used to live in the midlands, way back in the last century?

If you did, you may remember the Davenport's Beer at Home service.

Just like a milkman ... only BEER.

I can just imagine the bemusement when you tell an American or Canadian about "Milk-Men"!

Young 'uns might be baffled, but not old farts like me.

They were routine here actually, until the mid-late 70's or so. I still have two glass half-gallon bottles that never made it back to Cronin Farms Dairy.

Still have a dial-a-bottle here, but its not like you can set up a regular order with them, unfortunately. Phone up, give credit card details (so the transaction officially happens on premises) and the booze is dropped around within 30 minutes.

Our milkman turns up between 6.00 and 7.00 - perfect for breakfast time

Didnt have a milkman for years as he started getting later and later, however the one we started about a year ago comes at about 3am and we pay by direct debit so there's no hassle about paying him.

Yes its more expensive than a supermarket, but I find it last much longer in the fridge before it goes off and generally we always have milk available
