I think it goes Scumhampton, Pompey then us. But we'll jump above Pompey when we've entirely expanded the Amex and make into the Premiershite in a few years. Pompey at the moment, are looking to consolidate every season now. After what has happened to them whilst in the Premiershite with their previous owners and their crippling finiancial state.

Hi El P and Simster. Two things, firstly nobody is deluded because they dont agree with you, they just dont agree with you. Main point tho' is a question. If Saints are much bigger than Brighton or Pompey, then how come Brighton in the late 70s and at other times played to higher crowds when in a lower league? A Saints fan answered by saying that Brighton had a large fan base. If this is the answer, then if its on trophies, then are wimbledon bigger than palace?

If you want to believe that the Albion are a bigger club than Southampton on the basis of four seasons in the top flight (they have had 22) and one FA Cup final appearance (they have had two, and won one), feel free to do so. Of those four seasons in the top division, Southampton had higher average attendances in three of them.

Picking on occasional seasons when we had better crowds is disingenuous and comes across as very two bob.

But let's be fair, if it is done on history, then it is Pompey, the only SCC to have won the top league title. But it just depends on what people want to call the 'best' currently... History? Pompey won it during the post war years with a team who had largely been drafted there under national service. The other clubs were just trying to rebuild after the war. The cup was bought on the back of a £140m fraud. They've gone into administration or been sold for £1 at least 8 times the past few decades. Really nasty shitty club imo.

None of that actually makes a point apart from your dislike... they have won two FA Cups, been in five FA Cup Finals and won the League twice, that is all history records.

The thread is about which is the biggest club. It isnt a club that has twice briefly bought itself some on field success and crashed and burned spectacularly afterwards because their attendances and infrastructure is so poor.

Their record attendance is just under 52k... pretty much beats us. As I said before it depends on the circumstances as to how you define the 'biggest club' ... if it is history then it is Portsmouth and no amount of hatred/dislike will change history. Can you not get it or do you just like to throw stats out of the window and have a good bitchfest?

Portsmouth have spent the entire last 50 years in the lower divisions and gone bust 8 times due to lack of attendances and ticket sales- apart from 8 years in an artificial bubble funded by tax evasion and money laundering from arms dealing - the cases from which are about to come to court. If you think that makes them a big club, then your powers of reasoning are are least two standard deviations off the curve.
