Whites are persona non grata right now, we did bad, Racism, Colonialism, Police Brutality, Slavery, probably Sexism and Homophobia to name but a few of our many sins. So I just want to give the flipside if I may? I don't want this thread to be political please! Just, if you can think of any aspect of white or whiteness worth celebrating then share it
I nominate Fairport Convention and Sandy Denny.
We're not all bad

Racists and people who discriminate are persona non grata. Not 'whites'.

Get a grip!

To the OP's point - Celebrate achievements, criticise failings. Don't celebrate or denigrate particular people, nor particular races. Concentrate on actions. The requirement for us all to recognise unconscious biases and to remove potential barriers to equality of opportunity should not be heard as a criticism of white people, but should be viewed as a chance for all of us to discuss and agree ways to improve our institutions.

A big sticking point in these discussions seems to be that any discussion of inequality will ask that those who are advantaged by it recognise this fact. Most of us, especially those of us who may be disadvantaged in other ways, do not see ourselves as enjoying any kind of privilege. Recognition of the differing problems faced by individuals in their interactions with society's institutions should not be seen as a personal attack on those people who do not face the same issues.

I have Unhalfbricking and Fotheringay. They're both very good albums. I recently looked into some of Sandy Denny's solo stuff and will keep an eye out for it when they eventually let us back in secondhand record shops. I suspect that the surviving members of Fairport would squirm at being held up as an example of whiteness to be celebrated. It isn't helpful or meaningful. They have been and are recognised on their own terms. There may be a point in specifically celebrating the cultural achievements of people from communities who have been historically unrepresented in artistic cannons, as this may inspire involvement from those who may have been under the impression that this kind of endeavour is not for the likes of them. Wider involvement makes things more interesting and increases choice for us all.

In this case we must beware. If the logic is followed, then celebrating the achievements of a bunch of white British upper middle class folkies may inspire the formation of another Mumford & Sons. Surely, if there is one thing that all classes, creeds and colours can be agreed upon, its that we certainly don't need any more of that.

Brighton / Hove actually
After hundreds of years not even being to get out of the English channel with the French, Dutch, Spanish and Barbary Pirates attacking our ships and shores we mastered the art of ship building and built the fastest wooden ships of the time with the innovation of adding copper plating the underneath to streamline and protect against barnacles that slowed them down. This is what helped us rule the waves.

We connected all our coal and steel and manufacturing industries together with canals and became the first efficient mechanised industrial nation with our steam technology which led to being the front runners in railways and structural engineering. The rest of the world embraced our blue print which has influenced and shaped the modern world.

We gave Japan their first steam engine and track for them to copy and they now have surpassed us with the best railway network in the world.

We are credited for the jet engine and Rolls Royce have been virtually untouchable till this modern day and any competitors are copies of. The Harrier Jump Jet was decade ahead of it's time and Concorde was brilliant for the day.

Britain's innovation and industry should be something to be proud of.

Shame we lead the world in so few things nowadays eh symyjim? Sweden (popn 10m) and Norway (popn 5m) are just two countries that put us to shame in so many worldwide fields. Still, we’ve always got the EDL.

Whiteboards are pretty useful.

White Lightning, the tipple of the resident level inhabitant, has however, not made a good contribution to society.
