at uni I meet people from Eton, Harrow and other ridiculous places that charge £30 a year in fees. now thats f***ing posh

One would expect Eton and Harrow to charge more than £30 a year in fees.

It's probably something more like £40.

As for 'f***ing posh', I thought that was Becks.

(But, as we all know, when she's doing it she thinks of Gary Hart...:ascarf:)

I'm not fighting this war, it's the parents who are.

Even now, Varndean still has the reputation (mis-placed), 40-odd years on from finishing being a grammar school, as 'the' place to send your kids because they will have a better chance in life on the back of going there.

Did you not see the programme "the unteachables" which aired about 4-5 years ago showing kids from Varndean. That showed what a "posh" school it was with a bunch of fecking mutant troublemakers. It damaged Varndean for years with parents sending their kids anywhere but there. Bushy is right these kids just take up valuable resource and try to drag everyone down to their level

Whe I met her back in the 1990's my wife taught as Deputy Head at Whitehawk Infants (had been parachuted in by Education Dept. as was a new Head when Ofsted branded them a Failing School). Money was thrown at the place and some of the old staff were binned and it helped to a certain degree but the problem was overwhelmingly the parents.

They basically didn't give a stuff about their children's education, many being barely literate themselves. The place was burgled and vandalised on a regular basis and my wife eventually quit to become a head in a far nicer part of Sussex - Crawley!!!!

My favourite tale about the place was when Mum brought in little Wayne (age 5, complete with earring and shaved head) to have a talk with his Teacher.

Dad had of course long departed the scene but there was a new 'Uncle' who was Dad to at least one of his several brothers & sisters. Mum tells Teacher Wayne might be a bit tired because he was up late last night.

Teacher accepts that these people tend to involve children in late night revels when it might be best to put them to bed & leaves it at that until she hears that new Uncle was dragged out of the house around midnight for not paying his drugs bill (small scale Dealer apparently) by some boys from London Tarn who kicked seven bells out of him in front of the assembled family, with the parting coment that if he doesnt pay up next time it would be his kneecaps splattered all over the pavement.

15 years or so ago - I wonder what Wayne is doing these days?

wotz evry1s prob wiv falmer i went they're n it dint do me know harm

(Actually, I did go to Falmer. I then went on to BHASVIC and then Sussex Uni where I read Moleclar Genetics, so it really wasn't that bad. It was put on the failing schools list one year after I left, though, and there were rumours the drama teacher moved to an all-girls schol where hewas fired for inappropriate behaviour, but that ma have just bee a rumour.)

I went to Whitehawk Primary school but that was many years ago. IIRC out of the 120 odd who took the 11+ only 6 pupils (including me) passed in our final year there. Going to Varndean is still seen as a big plus point on your c.v. even leaving more than 30 years ago.

Looking at teaching jobs in the Brighton area, I see that there are some vacancies in Whitehawk...

If I were to get a job at a school there, what could I expect on a daily basis?

:p

Just the same experiences as if you were a teacher at any school in the country which is in a deprived area.

I work in another part of Brighton in a primary school. You would get a lot of challenging kids but there is plenty of support and targetted money to help. A lot of the kids have learning mentors to help on a one to one basis and this works really well. Don't know if you have them in Canada but we have league tables based on value added and Whitehawk actually comes out really high. They also have a new head on the way from the other side of Brighton who did well at their present school! Best of all you may even get a visit from Gully which is highly amusing...'We want Gully' 'We want Gully@

Thanks for that, I haven't actually applied specifically to Whitehawk but am looking at getting a job in Brighton somewhere. Just heard through the grapevine that it might be best to avoid this area, but really I will be happy to find anything in the Brighton area. I am just graduating from University/Teachers College here in Canada and looking for my first real job. Any help/advice/recommendations are greatly appreciated.

yes, and i dont f***ing blame them either, why not attempt to make the likes of falmer ,fawcett etc as good as the likes of varndean ? you can bet your f***ing life that varndean/stringer will be dragged down more to falmers level than these kids miraculously turning into model pupils. And why do you have to classify anyone who might want to give their child a leg up by moving to an area with good schools as "posh" ? seems to me you're fighting class wars that were out of date 50 years ago.

I teach at Falmer and I teach a cohort from Varndean and I'm telling you the kids I get from Varners are aren't as spot on as the vast majority of people think. nuff said.

I think the B&H idea would have been more innovative if they'd run a city-wide ballot so there were no more catchment areas either. That would have shaken things up a bit and evened up the standards.

Of course, in an ideal world, everyone would have the opportunity to go to a decent school. It's something that's taken as given in every other European country but it's a strange notion in the UK.
