I'm a definite cross over. Two blokes I regularly drink with before games are the same. Stone Island / CP / Adidas on but chilled as anything and often to be found in dark clubs and fields at sunrise during the 90s.

90s sure. But not in the mid late 70s - especially if you had dyed spikey hair etc...

Just because you "identify" with a certain subculture it doesn't automatically mean you have to slavishly follow their fashions and styles. It can just as much be an emotional, philosophical or musical connection as a fashion one. Furthermore the clothes you might choose to wear can just as much be about your own personal choice rather than following a trend. If you decide to dress in a certain style it might be because you like that particular look for yourself not because you want to look like everyone else because that's the current fashion.

Most people make considered choices about what clothes they wear and how they style their hair and most of those choices are based on current acceptable trends, so everyone is "following" and conforming to some degree even if they believe they are not. It's not always about what you choose to wear but also what you choose not to wear. Most people wouldn't dream of wearing flares today but they might have done 20 years ago or whenever it was flares made a comeback. The choice to no longer wear flares or certain other styles of clothing because you know it might make you an object of ridicule is just as much a sheeplike mentality as it is to consciously copy a certain trend, the difference being that you would be following the larger herd.
