That was probably out of convenience because Robert Smith used to play for Siouxsie sometimes.

Indeed.
Robert Smith did play guitar on that tour for Siouxsie & The Banshees, because the bands guitarist left just as the tour was about to start.
I did think at the time The Cure were booked as the support act for this tour, and Robert Smith seemed to do a brilliant job at short notice, but I was only 14 and probably didn't know the full story.

Where was this?

At the university (poly?), I guess it was either Grand Parade or Lewes Road, back in 1982 or 83? I'm not local so was bundled in the back of mate Charlie's mini, can't be sure if it was Theatre of Hate supporting. To be fair, it wasn't exactly the finest gig of all time, but as a 16/17 year old it was an event, I still play their album regularly, and The Cults 'Sonic Temple' is a masterpiece from their later years.

A then unknown Chris de Burgh supporting Cockney Rebel at Brighton Dome in the mid-1970s; only my second ever gig (my first having been Hawkwind at Worthing Assembly Hall).

Still love and listen to Cockney Rebel; absolutely detest Chris de Burgh!

I saw Rage Against the Machine supporting Pearl Jam in 1991 (I think) in LA, they were completely unknown at the time, anyway it was at least a year before their signature tune went viral around the world.

Miles Kane as a member of The Little Flames (who had the spellbinding Eva Petersen on vocals) supported a couple of bands in Brighton, possibly the Arctic Monkeys at their infamous Komedia gig in 2004/5ish, now member of The Last Shadow Puppets.

Not quite at the standard of some posts her but I metion it as they really were quite the good, were The Littles Flames.
