Now, don't take this as a negative, but as we have a few days to fill, let's have a discussion about which of the LARGE group of players at our disposal would leave / stay were we to be relegated and start next season in the Championship (not that I think we will). We have 3 groups currently who might be in the running.

  • 1st team squad of 25
  • Players out of Loan
  • Current U23 players

A total of 72 players,

10 Keepers, 26 Defenders, 25 Midfielders and 11 Forwards.

So, who do you think would leave were we to be relegated, who would be retain, and who from the Loan & U23 list would step up?

I personally think we have a wealth of players who would flourish in the Championship, and we'd come straight back up for this reason.

This is simply a thread for speculation and discussion.

Not going to waste any mental energy ( beyond these few words ) on this while it is still very much in the balance.

Too early the wave the white flag and plan surrender terms.

I'm sure a few have relegation clauses and won't stick around especially the international ones.

Give it a few more days into the Winter Break and you'll be back :)

Yep, pointless speculation.

Let's keep it positive

Plus there was a thread like this a couple of weeks ago

I'm very happy to play this game with the first team squad:

First Team Squad
Matty Ryan Keeper - stay, not good enough for a move to a P/L club and likes it here
Jason Steele Keeper - stay
David Button Keeper - stay
Shane Duffy Defender - stay - championship/P/L B division player
Lewis Dunk Defender - would definitely go, to a just outside top six team
Martin Montoya Defender - stay
Ezequiel Schelotto Defender - released
Adam Webster Defender - stay
Dan Burn Defender - stay
Bernardo Defender - stay
Tariq Lamptey Defender - stay
Yves Bissouma Midfield - released on same basis of Knockaert
Pascal Gross Midfield - stay
Jose Izquerdo Midfield - crocked so probably mutual ending of contract
Solly March Midfield - stay
Beram Kayal Midfield - stay
Aaron Mooy Midfield - stay
Alireza Jahanbaksh Midfield - stay, no one will sign him
Davey Propper Midfield - possible leave to P/L bottom half.
Dale Stephens Midfield - possible leave to Burnley?
Leandro Trossard Midfield - stay
Alexis Mac Allister Midfield - stay but then strop off
Neal Maupay Forward - stay
Glenn Murray Forward - stay

So in summary I'd say it's only Dunk that would view himself, quite rightly, as a proper P/L player who deserves to play there.

I'm very happy to play this game with the first team squad:

First Team Squad
Matty Ryan Keeper - stay
Jason Steele Keeper - stay
David Button Keeper - released/ replaced with one of loan keepers.
Shane Duffy Defender - Could be sold depending on relationship with GP, but I think stay
Lewis Dunk Defender - Depends if offers come in, probably stay unless big team targets him
Martin Montoya Defender - Sold or loaned
Ezequiel Schelotto Defender - stay as cover
Adam Webster Defender - stay
Dan Burn Defender - stay
Bernardo Defender - loaned or sold
Tariq Lamptey Defender - stay
Yves Bissouma Midfield - stays until january window if still not getting a look in sold
Pascal Gross Midfield - stay
Jose Izquerdo Midfield - released/sold
Solly March Midfield - stay
Beram Kayal Midfield - stay
Aaron Mooy Midfield - stay
Alireza Jahanbaksh Midfield - stay
Davey Propper Midfield - stay or loaned out
Dale Stephens Midfield - stay unless northern premier league team tries to sign him
Leandro Trossard Midfield - stay
Alexis Mac Allister Midfield - stay or loaned out
Neal Maupay Forward - stay
Glenn Murray Forward - stay

Due to our wage cap and the amount of highly rated players we have both in the squad and on loan I think we'll have a relatively strong squad for the championship should we go down, probably stronger than the one we have now. I feel like we'd probably lose a few players but I think the vast majority will stay and those who could leave may not be that important to the squad anyway. The long term plan is top 10 premier league regulars so even if we go down we can expect the board to do everything possible to give us the best hope of bouncing straight back up.

IMHO :

First Team Squad
Matty Ryan Keeper - Keep unless he gets better offer
Jason Steele Keeper - Release
David Button Keeper - Release, as IF in Championship, Walton & Sanchez would be good enough back up GK’s
Shane Duffy Defender - Think he’d leave as PL teams would take him
Lewis Dunk Defender - Like Duffy, think there would be plenty of PL suitors
Martin Montoya Defender - GP like CH doesn’t seem convinced so move him on
Ezequiel Schelotto Defender - Keep for the entertainment value and would be useful at Championship level
Adam Webster Defender - Keep, More than decent at a level down
Dan Burn Defender - Keep, but wouldn’t be surprised if we get an offer we couldn’t refuse for him from PL club
Bernardo Defender - Keep, if he’s happy to stay down a level
Tariq Lamptey Defender - Probably first choice RB
Yves Bissouma Midfield - Move him on, no consistency and lack of footballing intelligence
Pascal Gross Midfield - Move him on, build for the future
Jose Izquerdo Midfield - Keep, Will do a job and a match winner
Solly March Midfield - Keep, proven at Championship level
Beram Kayal Midfield - Move him on, best days probably behind him now
Aaron Mooy Midfield - Keep, influential for promotion push
Alireza Jahanbaksh Midfield - Keep, owes us
Davey Propper Midfield - Can’t see him playing in Championship
Dale Stephens Midfield - Experience would be vital in and around squad but I’d move him on
Leandro Trossard Midfield - Like Pröpper, can’t see him staying to play down a level
Alexis Mac Allister Midfield - Build the team around him whilst he’s here
Neal Maupay Forward - Keep, Championship experience and vital for promotion push
Glenn Murray Forward - Keep, oodles of experience & nous and down a level, GP might play 2 up top.

Along with the returning White, Clarke, Molumby, Baluta and Gyokeres, the squad should have enough quality, experience and pace to at least challenge for play-offs

Matty Ryan Keeper - will leave to maintain a level to match international aims.
Jason Steele Keeper - stay
David Button Keeper - stay
Shane Duffy Defender - stay
Lewis Dunk Defender - will go chasing the money and to further England hopes.
Martin Montoya Defender - leave, unsuited for the physical fight of 46 matches.
Ezequiel Schelotto Defender - stay
Adam Webster Defender - stay
Dan Burn Defender - stay
Bernardo Defender - stay
Tariq Lamptey Defender - stay
Yves Bissouma Midfield - stay
Pascal Gross Midfield - stay
Jose Izquerdo Midfield - crocked so probably mutual ending of contract
Solly March Midfield - stay
Beram Kayal Midfield - stay
Aaron Mooy Midfield - will leave, wanting top flight football. His new contract is an irrelevance, just meaning we’ll get a fee.
Alireza Jahanbaksh Midfield - stay
Davey Propper Midfield - leave chasing the money and to further Dutch team ambitions.
Dale Stephens Midfield - stay
Leandro Trossard Midfield - leave to further Belgium team ambitions
Alexis Mac Allister Midfield - stay
Neal Maupay Forward - leave for an uplift in money.
Glenn Murray Forward - stay

Players wanting even more money or feel top flight football helps their international cause, would all leave. Once they make that known behind the scenes, the club will allow that for the right fees.

Pt 2:

Loan Players
Robert Sanchez (Rochdale) Keeper - See last reply
Christian Walton (Blackburn) Keeper - See above
Tom McGill (Crawley) Keeper Release or year loan to L1 or 2
Carl Rushworth (Worthing) Keeper - Don’t know anything about him
Fynn Talley (Burgess Hill) Keeper - As above
George Cox (Fortuna Sittard) Defender - Thought we’d sold him, best assessed in pre-season as now 22
Ben White (Leeds United) Defender - See previous reply
Leo Ostigard (St Pauli) Defender - Keep, although think he would want move if not in first team plans
Leon Balogun (Wigan) Defender - Move him on, apart from Palace not really worked out
Matthew Clarke (Derby County) Defender - Keep, see previous reply
Kacper Lopata (Zaglebie Sosnowiec) Defender - Keep but another loan to L1 or 2 side
Tudor Baluta (Den Haag) Defender - Keep, but make or break summer for him
Soufyan Ahannach (Union Saint-Gilloise) Midfield - Release, never looked anywhere near good enough standard
Anthony Knockaert (Fulham) Midfield - Can’t see GP keeping him but would be vital again in promotion push
Jayson Molumby (Millwall) Midfield - Keep, see previous reply
Viktor Gyökeres (FC St Pauli) Midfield - Keep, Ditto
Max Sanders (AFC Wimbledon) Midfield - Keep, useful squad player or another loan?
Florin Andone (Galatasaray) Forward - Will be moved on but would be class down a level if given run of games
Billy Arce (SC Barcelona) Forward - Released, not pulling up trees at current club
Percy Tau (Club Brugge) Forward - Will be sold on as planned
Jurgen Locadia (Cincinatti) Forward - Can’t see him coming back but if does as well for Cincinnati as he did for Hockenheim, we’ll struggle to find a taker but there is a player in there somewhere.

Rushworth was recently linked with a move to Barcelona. So probably worth keeping hold of and trying to get him a loan at a higher level next season.

Dunk, Propper, Trossard, possibly Mooy would go.
Suspect we would get offers for Burn, Maupay and Bernardo

Yep. There'd be offers for a few others too, I reckon. White for one.

Still, I'd be confident of having a good crack at auto with the players we hang on to and it'd be a good opportunity to get some of the youngsters integrated. This is all very pie in the sky though as we're staying up.

It's unthinkable that we will be relegated so we are staying up as going down would put a serious dent in the work the club has put in to date what is it 12 games to go posable 36 points up for grabs

Sheffield away
Palace home
Wolves home
Arsenal away
Leciester home
Man united home
Norwich away
Liverpool home
Man City home
Saints away
Newcastle home
Burnley away

Interesting one will be when dunk goes, if white will want to come back to the championship if Leeds are promoted in our place.

I can’t see many of our foreign brigade wanting to hang around although to be fair this bunch have not set the prem alive and when you look at the squad, there are very few of them who would get in other better than us prem sides.... certainly the first person back on the plane out of England will be Mac Alister.

This is obviously all speculation as we have no real idea how this season will pan out, but it will be interesting if we do drop, knocky will be back, especially to try and placate the masses who will NOT be happy next season at all.
