He was certainly tremendous value, given the number of games, against the pittance we paid for him. I know I'm in a tiny minority here, but in my opinion, he tainted the memories, by staying about 4 years too long. As someone who LOVES playing football, and who would have given anything to play for a living, I can't fathom why somebody would waste the prime years of their career, picking up wages to pay a few reserve matches, when he could have been starring in League 2 or similar week in week out.
How can you say this after the massive role he played in our miracle escape of 2009? That's what I remember Gary Hart for the most over everything else he did! Lovely bloke and gave everything for the club!

He only played in the reserves whilst Wilkins was manager. He was very much part of Sladey's great escape team in 2009. You were at Bristol Rovers for that game, & saw what he contributed.

Great night that, but in his last FOUR years at the club he appeared in 38 league matches. I expect a fair few of thoe were a few minutes off the bench. I just don't think it's what I would have chosen to do with the last 4 years of a football career.

Incidentally, in those 38 matches (plus a dozen or so cup games) he scored zero goals. Happy to recognise the all round contribution of a forward player, beyond just his goals, but here is a limit. Important player at the club for a long time, but in those last 4 seasons I can only recall three moments - a great performance at Bristol Rovers, a game at Withdean when he came on in the 85th minute and got a straight red in the 86th, and missing a sitter in his last game when everyone was desperate for him to score.

The stat that stands out is how more goals Barnes has scored at home than away.

It has taken him nearly twice as long to score away. 450 mins
