All I'd say is that my Mac is much faster in pretty much every area compred to the HP and I really like the interface (once you get used to it). Also it never overheats and shuts down without notice. Maybe I had a dodgy HP but, even over a top level IBM, the Mac wins hands down if you don't need to use Excel all the time. Just my opinion but well worth considering.

Erm, neither does mine, never has done and frankly I can't remember any of the thousands of Windows laptops doing it either. What I have seen is a Mac go wrong and being a bastard to repair, quite often too. There are a lot of commonly used Apps that don't run well on Macs besides MS Office. Adobe is not clever on them and that is pretty much a standard. Granted if you're an IT novice a Mac has it's merits but not at the price.

A Mac Pro Book is by far the best Lap Top I have used for just about anything but the quality of visuals is the real clincher as well as its sheer power. You pay more but you get more. XL & MS Word are all part of the package now too.

I think it's always very "flair" when you see a Mac user on the train running boot-camp to run something like MS Office... Why don't they just got a PC laptop in the first place?

will spend some time now finding some decent reviews of the laptops mentioned and use some of those sites

Do you actually want to specifically buy a NEW one as opposed to a really decent 2nd hand one for maybe half the original price?

When I finally couldn't stand my office-issued Mac any more a few months ago, and they refused point blank to give me a proper laptop, I went out and bought a Samsung Q320 for about £500. Probably been superseded by a better model since then, but I love everything about it and if the specs aren't what you need, would recommend getting the cheapest Samsung that fulfils them.

I certainly wouldn't swap it for any Mac you could name, even if Steve Jobs promised to let me kick him up the arse...

Just out of interest do you really need it to be a laptop? Im just wondering because I know soooo many people (especially wilst I was at uni) who bought laptops for no other reason than that they are small and look cool. They hoenstly never left their room with them! If thats the case with you (and if not then fair play) for the love of god dont but a laptop. They are simply horrific unless you really need to work on the move and are extremely expensive and difficult to upgrade. This may be completely academic as a laptop may be completely necessary but hey, I f***ing hate laptops! (and it doesnt matter if they are Mac or PC!)

As others have said, Vaios are shockingly poor. We have an open policy when it comes to buying laptops but the IT dept has said that Vaios are definitely out

Dells are pretty good: I've had three of them and my Dell Inspiron, which is now 11 years old still works (albeit slowly).

Acer have got a good reputation: my sister loves hers, my current Windows machine is a Samsung N130, which (apart from a lousy mousepad) I like very much.

Seriously, if you have the money, get a macbook.

I bought a macbook pro about a month ago with a three year protection plan all for £900 (with student discount admittedly). A month down the line and I absolutely love it. It's extremely quick, very sleek, 10 hour battery life and because it doesn't use Windows, a lot less viruses threaten the computer.

Obviously it's a lot of money, I bought a Sony Vaio for £700 about three years ago and it was in a terrible state after two years. I know people who have had mac's for three years and they are still lightning quick.

If you know a student and have the money, a macbook is about £725 and completely worth it.

This - I did the same. Had a Sony Vaio for two years, it was dog shit, ditched it for a MacBook package on student discount a couple of months ago and never looked back.

I got my Macbook Pro, i7 processor, 2.66Gz, 500Gb hard drive, 4Gb Ram off eBay for £1350 brand new, when the RRP was £1800 - so there are 'bargains' (used loosely, 'cos it was still bloody expensive) out there. I'd advise shopping around. It shits all over every PC laptop I've ever had. And I've had a few!

Couple of issues with my 18m old Vaio. N button sticking & battery needed early replacement.

As a result, found out Sony Customer service/Repairs just awful. Recommend check quality of Customer support as part of research.

I'm well happy with my Acer Aspire 'Timeline X'.
The Wireless N picks up loads of feeds, the i5 processor is sharp, 500gig/4g memory HDscreen 1.3 webcam Multidrive and (get this) up to 12 hour battery life that is normally at least 7 hours of normal use!

p/c fahrvergnugen!
