ah the Wetherspoons snobs. maybe some havent had the pleasure of proper shithouse pubs that they feel having no music or TV and sometimes frequented by older men is somehow to be deplored in a pub. real ales, range of different beers to the usual suspects, decent food (better than many other chain pubs) and cheaper than elsewhere. no they arent classy or cool, they arent trying to be.

i will say the West st one is a bit shit, but thats more to do with its location than its ownership.

The last time I went in the one in George Street (which I reckon is the last time I'll go in the one in George Street) they had a few TVs dotted about screening Sky Sports News. Horrible.

A few pointers on pubs ..... don't drink in the nearest pub to a large railway station, don't drink in a pub with a wacky name and never, NEVER drink in a pub with a flat roof, near a railway station with a wacky name.

Also don't drink in a pub with day-glo cardboard stars advertising the price of their house doubles. (unless they have turned them around so the prices are on the plain white side - this is acceptable (qv Bow Street Runner)

Also, also don't drink in pubs with soft core pornography DVD dispensing machines in the Gents .... they are generally not any good (the pubs and the DVDs)

Marina one is best, never seen why people are so negative about the places to be honest

west quay is excellent, loads of ciders on as well and nice staff. plenty of tellys too. watched half the world cup in there.

it always makes me laugh though how they built a place from scratch to look like an old converted warehouse. thats a bit mental.

there are loads of pubs like that in B&H they are not all wonderfully characterful and quirky drinking holes by a long chalk. wetherspoons in some places (not B&H necessarily) are the only pubs still open, otherwise lots of areas would be totally pub less. they may not be great but think of all the other shitholes there are, wetherspoons gets a bad rap at least most of them are still open. round my way pretty much every pub has shut in the last 5 years, and are now flats bookies or mosques.

One question, could the independent pubs be closing because of competition from larger more powerful and cheaper chain pubs? If you want to keep your independent ones alive don't go to these shitty chain pubs they are the Tesco's pub (not even pubs just rooms really) of the inebriated drinker.

Just recently discovered the joys of The Snowdrop in Lewes, other than the ubiquitous Harvey's there are many interesting beers, including Czech Budvar light and dark,some Meantimes and Dark Stars and even Delirium Tremens on tap !

The one in the Marina is great, we went there with the family about half a dozen times this summer. The food is brilliant for what it is (i.e. unpretentious pub grub) and I can get in and out for under £100. Also because it's Wetherspoons your visit isn't ruined by loads of uber-trendy middle class snobs moaning about Brighton becoming a clone town and isn't it a shame that the Wetherspoons has replaced the organic oyster bar?

The Bright Helm - It was good when I was about 18 but is just a pre-clubbing cattle market now
The Cliftonville Inn - Never been
The Post and Telegraph - Really is naff, my office used to overlook it and it was hilarious watching the OAPs queue up in the morning
The West Quay - Pretty decent and never too crowded so gets my vote

Let's face it, in the 'old' days, a pub was an institution, and part of the community. It was run by a portly, rosy cheeked couple, and frequented by all strata of locals

Nowadays, they are seen as 'business opportunities', and change owners as frequently as they change their names

I'm all for progress, but some continuity is also a good thing
