Am I missing something or was the whole crux of this the fact that Sambo was Sam's nickname - as christened by his friends and as he's been called for years?

Safeway's posting about it was tongue in cheek - even I remember that. I was amazed by the number of people who jumped on it. Sambo has been called such for weeks with no comment, then as soon Safeway stoked it up a bit people went crazy.

Ultimately, if Sambo is Sam's name so far as him and his friends and family are concerned then so be it. If my Bengali girlfriend got the hump because of Packie Bonner's name I'd tell her not to be so bloody daft. But then she's aware of his name and she didn't bat an eyelid when she first heard it. Sam’s nickname being Sambo is not the same thing as far right groups hanging blacks, the police discriminating against minorities, psycho xenophobes nail bombing Indians in Brick Lane or people on the terraces abusing the “******” on the other team.

I didnt know his name was Sam. Fair enough. I am too old and not obsessed with NSC enough to actually care ansd follow the ins an outs of peoples lives that much. But I did see Safeways sig and thought it was some student attempt to be contraversial and wind up over sensitive pc types ie me. I am just getting really tired of this idea that using racist words etc is somehow funny and anti pc. Your right though, it is all about perspective and mine was that Safeway whoever he is was on some sort of wind up, if not then I take it all back.
