Spurwing Island, Lake Kariba, Zimbabwe.
Blimey,... I went there in 1972/3 on camp with the cubs/scouts ( I was 10 or 11)....... but it wasn't a fancy honeymoon destination then,... and we had armed guards because of the insurgency situation. I lived in Rhodesia as it was then, for 5 years.

We went there for a friends wedding last year but only for a couple of days. This time we're staying for a week and a further week in the Wild Geese Lodge outside Harare.

Yes, thats in the northern suburbs of Harare, I lived in an area called Hatfield in the S.E. of the city( Salisbury when I lived there) not far from the airport. I still want to revisit the places I lived, I also spent a year in Bulawayo in the south of the country, but I would feel strange pouring my hard earned cash into the hands of Mugabe and his henchmen, who lets be honest, have almost single-handedly been responsible for the murder of tens of thousands of his fellow countrymen, black and white. I should put it aside now really and contribute to the recovery of the nation, but it just doesn't sit right at the moment.

It is tragic, the Zimbabweans are a well educated and gentle people and all they want is enough money to feed their families. Unfortunately the infrastructure is still crumbling except in the areas occupied by Mugabe and his Generals. The farmlands are reverting to jungle as there is not sufficient experience to run and manage the large farms. The bread basket of Africa is now empty, but it is still a beautiful country and the people are among the friendliest I have ever met.

No shortage of cash amongst some Albion fans it seems.

Holidays are funded by benefits and people taking out payday loans and deliberately getting themselves into debt according to Uncle C on the food bank thread.

3 teenage kids and living in one of the most expensive places in the world, so in my garden I would have thought.
That's if I can even afford to do that.

Is Perth really that expensive? Serious question.

Yes it is now, wasn't when I arrived but you could see the trend coming.
My food shop for the week since arriving has gone from $185 to $400 and there are very few extravagances.
A pint of beer is equivalent to six pounds fifty! and that's at a cheap members club.

My most expensive holiday ever. 3 weeks in 5* hotel on Kenya beach with a five day personal safari in our own jeep with driver & guide. This will be our last 'big' holiday as they are getting too expensive. Next year it's back to Mexico or Dom Rep at £1000 at head.

And this year could be our last family holiday for a while as the kids have aged.
