Fear the worst if Seagulls fall behind

By Andy Naylor

Fans should brace themselves for a fourth successive home defeat in League One if Albion fall behind against Port Vale tomorrow.

Go a goal up and they can probably look forward to a first Withdean win for seven weeks.

An analysis of results this season exposes how important it is for Dean Wilkins' young side to score first.

Of the 15 matches in which the Seagulls have got their noses in front, they have gone on to win ten of them, draw two and lose three.

The contrast with the 13 games where they have conceded first is staggering. They have lost 11 of them and drawn the other two, at Oldham last month and at home to Bournemouth in September when they were assisted by the dismissal of Marcus Browning.

In fact, Albion have not come from behind to win a league game since December 2005, when Mark McGhee's men recovered from an early Stuart Elliott effort to beat Hull 2-1 at Withdean in the Championship with goals by Seb Carole and Charlie Oatway.

Wilkins admitted: "Probably the key to us is we need to try to make sure we score the first goal, which has been proving critical of late.

"Once you go a goal up it gives you something to hang onto and I think it helps lift the spirit in the team, that there is a real chance of getting back on track and claiming three points.

"We need to be a bit more positive and aggressive in our attacking play because that is what we were when we were on our really good run.

"The attacking play was really positive. It was quick and aggressive and we were scoring freely. That is what we have got to try to bring back."

Albion have not scored more than one goal in a game since Dean Hammond's second-half double secured maximum points at home to lowly Cheltenham in early December.

The 2-1 defeat at Vale a fornight later launched their dramatic slide down the table from tenth, within four points of the play-offs.

Now Wilkins is calling for a repeat of the resilience showed by his players in last Saturday's 1-0 victory at Chesterfield, which was followed by Tuesday's tame exit from the Johnstone's Paint trophy at Bristol City.

He said: "We started off with a spell of winning games, then we went on a run of defeats, then a successful period and then a run of defeats again.

"I think it highlights that there is enough character around the place to bounce back. What we have to make sure is that we don't have runs of defeats, just the odd defeat.

"I'm hoping the experiences they've had even up to now will make them realise that, once you've had one defeat, you have to be really dogged in the next game, like we were at Chesterfield.

"We have got to make sure now that Tuesday is totally forgotten about and we have the Chesterfield game in mind when we approach Port Vale on Saturday."

Wilkins saw enough in the 2-1 setback at Vale Park five weeks ago to believe Albion can prevent Martin Foyle's similarly inconsistent side from completing the double over them.

"The goals we conceded that day were too easy but the performance after that was really encouraging," he said.

"One of their players, I think it was Danny Sonner, actually sought me out after the game to congratulate us and indicate that we deserved to win.

"So, even with some of the defeats we've had, there have been some really positive comments and performances."
