Had a row years ago with a fella who thought Watford Gap, was actully Watford. I tried telling him it was the services just where the M1 meets the M6, but he was having none of it. Quite a strange one, as the fella in question very rarely got off his arse other that to go to bed, have a shit and or go to the pub.

I've never understood the concept of "the north". I recognise "the north east" and "the north west", but am baffled when I come across people who imagine that Merseyside is the same as Tyneside.

Perhaps you don't know the North as well as you think then. Professional scouser, John Bishop had no problems with the concept:

"There's a make-do attitude in the North. We never got the good jobs or the breaks and during the Thatcher period it was almost government policy to run us down. So finding optimism in humour has been encouraged up here. You go to the provincial cities in the North now like Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds and Newcastle and they're all buzzing, but that sense of humour is ingrained."

I've lived in Nottingham for a few years and urs proudly midlands.
Sheffield up t'road is North about an hour away up the m1.
They all have funny accents. And there is no poets corner here.

Anyone at the Crawley FA cup game (in '92?) will tell you that the North starts there.

Worked in a nursing home in Nottingham, they were all calling me ducky or duck, northerners!!

I'd say the north starts from the corner stands to be honest. Gonna be great when that whole bank is full of fans :)

Edit: I also thought this was going to be a thread about the new seating areas... (09:47...)

It's a relative term. If you're in the far South it's reasonable to describe anywhere above the Staffs/Cheshire borders across to north Lincolnshire as the North. But when you arrive there, you are much more specific.

Likewise, if you're in the North you'd certainly describe anywhere south of, say, a line 50 miles above the M4 as South. Plymouth and Brighton are both simply South if you're up there, but not if you're down here.

i live in Crawley and I considered myself "Northern"
Well that settles it then, straight from the horses mouth.

It's sad that we no longer play Plymouth Argyle, Exeter City or Torquay United. I miss the away fans responding to an Adam El-Abd tackle with a chant of "Dirty Northern Bastard".
I also enjoy that (albeit predictable) banter.

Er, I knew that - no, really
