I was wondering if singing is a 'newish' or has been around for ever at football matches. Seems as if it was started by sme drunk people one day and has kinda stuck. Anyone know???

OK maybe this wont be as in depth as Easy's answers but i can help....

According to the superb "Football Grounds of Great Britain" by Simon Inglis there were reports of Blackburn Rovers fans singing at matches from as early as 1901 but it really only took off with Liverpool fans singing on the Kop in the sixties basically just singing the pop songs of the day (hence you'll never walk alone)

You'll never walk alone was from the musical Carousel.

Gerry and the Pacemakers had a hit with it in the 60's and was a well known Liverpool fan.
The Kop took it up and sang complete with all the scarves being raised.
England being in the World Cup helped as you had crowds chanting England after the clapping rythms.

It took off after that.

Yep seen footage of scousers singing Beatles songs on the kop in the 60's, however my old man is a Tottenham fan and he said that when Spurs won the double they sung Glory, Glory Hallelujah and the Spurs go marching on he was in his late twenties then so he remembers it well. This was 1961 so maybe singing at footy has been around a bit longer?

Possibly but at 13 I had only been to the Goldstone ground at that stage.

"On the ball, City", the Norwich song claims to be the oldest football song. It dates from around 1905. Interestingly enough...

The earliest Albion songs I remember were all to do with our midfield cum forward powerhouse Charlie Livesey (circa 1967). The whole North Stand would join in on songs:

Charlee, Charlee
I'd go a million miles for one of you goals
Oh Charleee

(to the tune of Mammy)

And then there was a chant of

Ra ra ra ra Liv-e -seeee

It was a brilliant atmosphere even way back then

I remember asking my Dad this question and he said they used to sing at Palace before WW2, the favorite one wasn't so much a song as a type of 'singing chant' that went 'Up the Paleeee, up the Paleeee, up the Paleeeee'.

No, you are wrong there Brov .... they used to sing "God Save the King" and "Knees up Mother Mary" at the palace in those days!!!!!

In London village.
They were singing at Ibrox in 1919/20 according to my (now sadly deceased) Grandmother. She was still able to sing one of the songs - where was ? when ? put the ball in the net - to me shortly before her death in 1997 at the age of 97.

Where is Easy 10's answer? I'm sure it would make an inteesting read!
He may well be consulting his copy of "Dicks Out 2: You're Not Singing Any More?" by Rob Merrills, which is (apparently) the definitive history of English football chants.

I certainly remember singing in the late fifties at Newport County - and the impact on TV of the Spurs successes in 1961.

A Norwich fan told me that the weird Norwich song "on the ball City/never mind the danger" dates from the 1920s.

I can't believe all those big crowds watched in near silence.

Hmmm - I'm sure I remember a football history TV programme interviewing a Brighton old boy called Zilwood March about the long chant they had back in his day.
The song was all "dennis passed to smithy and he just passed it back, then hacker took the ball on and passed it down the back"....or something like that??
