When I finished my A levels I had a place at Nottingham University to read History. One week before term started I decided I wanted a year off, and I asked to defer. They said "no - you'll have to reapply."

Fair enough. I took a year off anyway [which I spent working for a tree surgeon by day and getting off my face in Brighton every night], and when the year was up I went to London Uni to read Politics & Philosophy instead.

Something similar happened to me. Although I didn't get the ABC I needed and instead of joining the mad rush to find a place, I reapplied the following year - different course and different Uni's, having been offered a place at Portsmouth and the rest is history.

The only decision I had to make was Belize or Ecuador...

We managed to get stuck/lost in so many of those buildings when I went to look around the uni'.
