He was a proper player. Opposing players were terrified of him. I'm sure I saw a couple of strikers just give him the ball and run away at the sound of his thundering boots, closing in on them from behind, knowing that at any second they would be clattered. The original tank.

For me the 0 - 0 draw at White Hart Lane 1977-78 was the most complete performance I have seen by a centre-half. He was immense that day!!

Did he play centre half - I thought he was a defensive midfielder? Mullery brought him in to replace the much more talented Steve Piper. Never rated him myself.

The original tank.

Why does this come up so often? He may well have been nicknamed Tank but he was at least the third Brighton player to earn this nickname - there may well have been others in the depths of history - so while he was Tank, he definitely wasn't the original.

He was a decent player though. I'm not sure that he was particularly dirty, just as tough as nails.

Thanks for posting that video. What fantastic memories from those days. And that was Clark's debut. Brilliant !

No worries!! There's some other good ones there including the 3-1 win at Newcastle to give us our only (for now) promotion to the top division. In those days called the First Division.

Well - pardon me for being so stupid, oh perfect one.

Who was the original Tank?

The original "tank", as far as I know, was Des Tennant who played for us between 1948 and 1958 making over 400 appearances. He went on to coach for us then became a scout. He was a big favorite of my fathers and many others. Passed away last year.

Thanks for the info. I remember the name but slightly before my time.
