Northern Exile
Seeing as this thread has popped up again, here is another one.
It was about 30 years ago, the year before I went to this particular factory. In those days, you had to employ a certain quota of disabled people, and if you couldn't you had to get a special permit from the Jobcentre. So this factory employed a man with a false arm who hand-trimmed hot plastic jerrycans, and another who had been injured all down one side of his body, and so had limited movement.
Also in those days, the Chairman visited from out of town, took them for the Christams lunch, paid for the booze - and then day and afternoon shifts WENT BACK TO WORK. So lots of alcohol was consumed, and some piled into someone's three-wheel Reliant Robin. The driver had had a few and rolled it over on a bend. A policeman attended the scene and one ot two were dazed. The lad with the injured side of the body was motionless and had an obviously twisted leg. The copper raised one of his eyelids, found a staring eye, pronounced him dead and passed out. The dead body then stirred and came to. He also had a glass eye on that side of his body!
