The piers had sections taken out.
.

I understand this was the start of the demise of the West Pier. The sections were taken out for two reasons: 1) to stop the Germans using the piers as a landing stage, and 2) the steel was used for weapons, etc. Apparently much cheaper steel was used to patch up the West Pier after the war.
