You can row a boat, you can’t row a ship.

A ship is a large vessel that travels the world's oceans and other navigable waterways, carrying cargo or passengers, or in support of specialized missions, such as defense, research and fishing. Ships are generally distinguished from boats, based on size, shape, load capacity and purpose.
That doesn’t help. Where is the distinction between a large boat and a small ship for example ? This has ruined my day.

I think a " Ship " was the descriptive term for a sailing vessel that had 2 masts and was square rigged. You had Barques and Clippers and Barquentines but the " Ship " was so popular in numbers that the name became synonymous with any reasonable sized sailing boat.

Going off at a slight tangent, how important does someone have to be to get assassinated rather than just murdered

Assassination

Assassination is the willful killing, by a sudden, secret, or planned attack, of a person—especially if prominent or important. It may be prompted by political, ideological, religious, personal, financial, or military motives.

Anyone mentioned weight? Maybe anything over 1000tonne? I've just asked an ex-naval officer and that was his suggestion.

Ah. Finally. Being someone that works on a cruise ship, this is something that often gets asked.

I was always told a boat can fit on a ship. We have lifeboats on a cruise ship.
I was going to say the same, but remembered when HMS Nottingham ran aground and had to be transported back home on a ship. Does this make HMS Nottingham a boat?

I thought an assassination was one that was booked and paid for - you hire an assassin - otherwise its just murder. So anyone can be assassinated if hated enough.

I thought a boat could fit on a ship but not the other way round but had never scaled that up. an aircraft carrier could easily carry a 'ship'

Heres another one - how many is a few? when does a few turn into several or many. A few is less than a dozen and more than a couple so in the 3-11 (does half a dozen mess this up)

In my view it's in the mind of the killer. If the assassin believes the subject is important to kill due to political, ideological, religious, financial, or military reasons then it is an assassination. It doesn't matter whether it makes the news programs or not.
