[Albion] When did modern life ‘defeat’ you?

Great minds eh?!

Now I'm not going to dig in too hard (which is tempting seeing as this is all a bit "millennials have ruined everything") but seems to me that the OP has decided that they're better than "the modern age" (and therefore those that embrace it) and I'm going to tell over a thousand people about it. To be honest...
if you say so!

I dont think modern life has defeated me, but there's aspects of it that I choose not to engage with; I live by the adage "try anything once" (except for morris dancing and incest).
I went on facebook and found it was mostly people bragging and "like farming" so I binned it.
I like twitter, especially when I'm pissed and Albion win.
I like CDs but find digital music easier so I rip them when they arrive or buy from Amazon and get the download included. Stopped listening to Radio 1 in the 80's. Stopped listening to Radio 2 when Dab came along. Mostly listen to blues/rock stations on the internet now.
Never been into going to the cinema, I'll wait for a film to come on TV. Superhero movies though ????
Technology is my job, I am a bit of a specialist in the field of analogue transmission where most of the network is now digital. Recently started doing it again and much prefer it.
I have a iPhone for everything. Except calls. I have a Doro for that because my hearing is shot and the Doro has much better audio quality.

I prefer fountain pens and analogue watches too.

I'm 55 (but on a good day look 54)
That did make me chuckle :lolol:

Does anyone still buy porno mags?

Interesting question! You’d think not but it has been said to me that our shop has the best selection of specialist gentleman’s magazines in the area and I am always astounded at how many we sell. Do these people not have the internet? I’m just going to wait for all the “ internet hasn’t reached Yorkshire yet” jokes.

This conversation reminds me of a footnote in a book by Niel Gaiman and Terry Pratchet, Good Omens...

"NOTE FOR YOUNG PEOPLE AND AMERICANS: One shilling = Five Pee. It helps to understand the antique finances of the Witchfinder Army if you know the original British monetary system:

Two farthings = One Ha'penny. Two ha'pennies = One Penny. Three pennies = A Thrupenny Bit. Two Thrupences = A Sixpence. Two Sixpences = One Shilling, or Bob. Two Bob = A Florin. One Florin and one Sixpence = Half a Crown. Four Half Crowns = Ten Bob Note. Two Ten Bob Notes = One Pound (or 240 pennies). One Pound and One Shilling = One Guinea.

The British resisted decimalized currency for a long time because they thought it was too complicated."

What's the demographic of your average jazz-mag buyer?

When working in Tottenham Hale, about 10 years ago the Hasidic Jews would travel from Stoke Newington and Stamford Hill into Tottenham and buy all their "Jazz" mags from the BP petrol station so they had a quick get away and were just far enough away not to be recognised. It was funny watching them loiter around waiting for customers to thin out and then rush to the counter with Razzle,

For me, the precise moment was a mile down the road from Heathrow Airport in May. I hadn't been back over for a couple of years and did so for my 40th birthday celebrations. I picked up the hire car at terminal 5, drove out with the radio on, flicked through all the major radio stations and it was all utter utter shite. OK so it's not news that the radio is shite, however, I could usually find something to bear but noooo not on this occasion, it had reached new depths of shite so I just gave up on it. I finally reached that point in my life where I said to myself "this shite all sounds the same" and as I digested those words echoing around my head, I knew modern life had scored a victory over me.

Even worse is when you hear songs you think are utter shite but you used to really like them.

And presumably a newspaper with which to slide it into once the purchases had been made?

Just goes to show that the demographic is far more varied than the stereotypical raincoat man and hormonal teenager. Once, when I was about 19-20 years old, I was standing in the vicinity of the magazines in a newsagent, when a reasonably attractive woman of smaller stature asked me, and I quote, 'sorrry, this is a bit embarassing, but could you reach the top shelf and grab me a copy of Escort?'. I duly obliged, as if it was the most normal request ever to minmise her embarassment, but I won't deny that I spent the next few weeks (months, years?) imaging her enjoying reading the magazine that I chivalrously provided.

My friends wife, used to go the newsagent and buy his for him, which I thought was rather odd, however who am I to question what folks do, they have been happily married for 22 years now.
He did get caught on the back of a national express coach once from Manchester to Stoke bashing one out.... which I do find odd.

His profession an actuary.....

As far as my young mind's over active imgination was concerned, this bird was definitely buying it for her own pleasure, and don't go suggesting otherwise!

I did once also get asked by a woman at WHSmiths in Heathrow airport if I could pass her 3 jazz mags from the top shelf! However, she was clearly part of a hen weekend flying out, and the mags were no doubt to be used as part of some 'hilarious' hen shenanigans, so didn't have quite the same effect.

Social media is a good tool if you can see past the twats posting their life movements, I belong to a great group of sparks from up and down th country we share ideas, solutions have a laugh and a joke and also it’s generated new business. For me age is just simply a number don’t get old before your time life is far to short for that.

use it to your best advantage ......lot of plusses , plenty of minuses ..!!
