As health has become quite trendy the last 20 years with a lot of people stopping smoking and drinking, I'm wondering how many out there are planning to stop using smartphone now when it's pretty evident it has a pretty bad impact on mental health, family relations etc? I've been pretty tired of watching this drug taking over people's lives since day one.

Like a lot of things, it's ok in moderation. Too much and it's totally anti-social and not good for the healthy aspects of life (exercise, food and sleep).

Also you've got to just be sensible in what you read and follow and realise that there's an awful lot of crap out there.

But kept under control it's a fantastic tool for social interaction and communication.

It's the youngsters that worry me. They've not developed enough of a cynical approach or a thick skin to discount some of the sh1te put out there. My 12 year old asked why isn't someone doing something about climate change because we'll all die in 20 years because that Greta girl said so (or something like that). Doesn't discount that we need to do something about all the crap we pump into the planet, but to be worried we'll all die in 20 years is just social media panic driven drivel IMHO.

I love my smartphone. A fantastic piece of kit. Why would I want to give it up? It provides huge benefits to my life and I can't think of a single negative.

They've also no doubt contributed to a fair number of deaths and serious injury by those who use them whilst driving.

Just exercise a bit of self control if you are using it too much. Smart phones are fantastic bits of technology.

Why not? They're great.

I just don’t want to be like the people I see in pubs or on trains, just staring blankly at the screen, ignoring the people they’re with, hypnotised...

And don’t get me started on people who have to photograph their food or who can only watch bands at live gigs by turning on their iPhones and staring at the screens.

Watching a gig or football match through your phone is just plain wrong and I've never understood the trend of photographing food. However, that doesn't make the technology bad, just the way we use them.

I run a lot (for exercise and enter races). This morning, beofre my run, I was able to check the up to date (to about five minutes) weather forecast on my phone. During my run I tracked my distance and pace on my phone and, if my wife had needed me back at base for any reason, she could have rung me and I would have been able to hail an uber or get a bus ticket on my phone.

This afternoon I will check the team on Twitter or the Albion app on the way to the game, text my mates to see which bar we'll meet in and stick on a couple of bets and my Super 6.

However, when I am with my mates we will not stare at our phones at all. We'll have a beer and a conversation like normal human beings.

People are shit. Phones aren't.

This. My phone stays in my pocket when I'm socialising.

I do a lot of long hikes, my phone has found routes for me without carrying maps around but more importantly my Parim work app allows me to book Annual Leave, accept rotas, see who is working where, clock in and clock out, check my hours worked, so and and so on, all without once having to pick up the phone to HR :lolol:
Well worth the cost of the phone!

Anyway, smartphones are great, this discussion is ridiculous.

I wouldn’t photograph food, but I’ve an awful feeling I’d be hypnotised by the damn thing and have to keep checking it. I’m bad enough with an iPad, so having a portable version for when I’m out the house... no thanks.

With self-control, I’m sure they’re great but I’m not sure I’d have enough self-control and I’ve seen that plenty of others certainly don’t.

For the record, I wouldn’t ban them. Freedom of choice takes precedence, but they're not for me and I’m concerned about the effect they have on people. And I wouldn’t let anyone under 12 own one.
