think bigger bins would have to part of the solution, but mainly enforcement of no litter by laws. no point having £1000 instead of £100, or even less, if its not seen to be enforced.

I'm quite proud of that one. Been shared quite a lot.

Meanwhile, this isn't a council problem, and people shouldn't be making out it is. They are the ones who do actually clean it up. This is a 'responsibility of the individuals' problem. They took the rubbish on the beach, they can take it off.

Speaking to a councillor today, the problem with litter patrols issuing on-the-spot fines (not a bad way of tackling it) is that they don't work after dark, and after dark is when the majority of the littering occurs.

These aren't Brighton-specific but would help. A pound deposit on bottles of beer and two pounds on a bottle of wine - that will encourage more people to take bottles away with them

I'd also explore the possibility of coding every individual bit of wrapping and recording the card that's used to pay for it. Then, when collecting rubbish, it would be possible to scan the litter and find out who bought it. That person gets fined £500 per individual piece of litter.

And more bins ... emptied more regularly.

Bottle deposits are a brilliant idea. It not only encourages folk to take them home, but also encourages people to collect those which are left behind and get the refund back themselves.

Bottle deposits, yes. Bins, specifically recycling bins, yes.

But the coding system could be problematic. Imagine if a seagull or some scheming neighbour pulled your rubbish out of the bin and you got fined for it.

What happened recently though? This hasn’t been a major issue before,?

Get the stewards at the entrances to beach to take the rubbish off of people before they go in. Brought sandwiches in cling film? Unwrap them and put the cling film in the bins with the stewards. Brought crisps and dips? Put the dip in one hand, crisps in the other, leave the wrappers/containers in the bin on the way in. Got a drink, down it and put the container in the bin before you get onto the beach. Don't want to hold your unwrapped food? Don't bring any - buy from the stores down there. Eat/drink at the 'store' and dispose of any rubbish before returning to your place at the beach.

The city supermarket formats Sainsburys local, tesco metro have a lot to answer for. Supermarkets package stuff to protect it for a large weekly shop. No one does this in these smaller stores and the supermarkets use the same amount of packaging, which ends up left on our beaches, balanced on top or beside overflowing bins and ripped up by wildlife.

More about extra bins and rubbish collection

From yesterday's Argus, apologies for the screenshot but not everyone wants to see a link full of the adverts.

Anyone caught littering is sent to a Greta Thunberg rehabilitation centre.

We have people i cant remember what their job title is in Brighton who will follow someone smoking to see if they will just throw it on the ground or drain and issue a fine. Yet they are powerless when 11 tons of rubbish is left.

We had a 4 week period during this crisis where no recycling rubbish was collected we have communal bins for everything else. 4 weeks and then they only took half of what we had built up. Guess where the other half ended up.
