What's your favourite Sussex golf course ?

Can you get on there? Won't let me near the place till my old man has been a memebr for at least 45 years, and his old man has been a member for the preceding 50 years. (actually that is a bit of an exageration but it is a bit like that there)

Even a friend of mine is a member, and I can't play with them because I can't prove I have known them for more than 10 years. And it costs £75 a round for guests.

Here is an excerpt from their membership requirements

"The West Sussex welcomes new members. However the Club is fortunate to have a Waiting Pool for membership and it is possible that a new applicant might have to wait up to four years before elected. Younger candidates, especially those with low handicaps, are usually fast-tracked.

Candidates should be proposed and seconded by members of at least 5 years standing, and then must be supported by signature from a further 8 members, of whom 4 should also submit letters of support. Special arrangements can be made for a candidate new to the area to be sponsored by the Committee."

And it's in West Chitington and Wiggenholt really, not Pulborough. The 15th hole is about 400 yards from my house, which is definately in West Chiltington.

That's does not sound like a place I would want to play anyway. please set your watches back 60 years.

That's about the long and short of it.

They do allow laydees, my friend who is a member is a lady, but she can't take me as a guest as I don't have a low enough handicap, in fact I don't have a handicap certificate so can't play there anyway.

You can't pay a green fee there, you have to be invited by a member to play, or be nominated to play as a guest (for £70).

The only sad thing is that the course is rated one of the 100 best in Europe, and 2 of the holes are in the top 100 inland holes in the UK. I'd love to give it a go, but I don't think that is going to happen any time soon.

Perhaps I can sneak down the end of my road late one evening with a 7 iron and a few balls and play the par 3 15th a few times.

sounds about right. The only reason I liked it was that I ate like a lord and snoozed in the afternoon during annual audits and it's the only golf course I've ever set foot on. The old secretary Commander Martindale was a misogynist old hoot, but yes...very cliquey, very exclusive. Didn't realise they weren't all like that.

I played there for the first time last month. I don't like heights but the 18th tee is quite something - possibly one of the finest views in Sussex. Actually playing the course was a bit tricky though, it's too damn hilly for me !!

Played the East Sussex National West Course today and didn't do too badly, but I have to agree with Barnet Seagull with Seaford Head - one of the most picturesque courses in the county when you're on the back nine.

Eastbourne Downs has awesome views and is a solid test of golf. There's no better place to be on a still day.... not many of them though so I joined Royal Eastbourne instead !!

I started at Seaford Head which is a cracking little course and a good test off the back tees but still a bit too short with modern equipment.
I moved on to Eastbourne Downs for 3 years before joining Seaford Blatchington.....both good long courses.
But my favourite course is Mannings Heath Waterfall.

Agree with MH but full of old farts. Old course at Cottersmore was good, but gone down hill over the last few years.
