White mouse inn, on the isle of Wight. Views are fsntastic

It changed back to The Spotted Dog a couple of months ago. It's run by the folk who run The Snowdrop in Lewes and it's excellent. Brilliant and ever changing range of 7 guest ales, decent lagers (Meantime and Brooklyn plus a Belgian one and a Czech one) and even the stout is a local one from Hepworth.

Nice punters as well.
Having spent the last two evenings in The Snowdrop, I can only speak up for the excellent knack that Dom and Tony have with pubs.

The Britannia Inn, Dungeness. It's right on the pebbles.

im not usually too fussed, as long as they do a beer i like. i do like a sence of character, either quirky layouts (like the Lord Nelson) or some dodgy old boy proped near the bar. if i had to pick a favorite, i reckon it has to be the Great Eastern, also like Turner's Old Star in Wapping, like going on a set for some cockney film.

I totally agree. The Snowdrop is a wonderful place. Glorious in the summer. I'm really bowled over by The Spotted Dog though. I cannot think of a single thing I'd improve. Word is obviously getting out as the crowds have been rapidly increasing over the past few weeks. A nice nod to the pub's (and Brighton's) heritage in the name as well. Good luck to them.

In my defence, I was left unsupervised.

Agreed, great to see the old name back This is going off-topic a bit, but why do pubs change their names? The old name never really dies (like the Palace Pier) and it becomes a bit of a badge of honour amongst true Brightonians (or at least long-time inhabitants) that they refer to pubs by their 'real' names and not by some fleetingly-fashionable or vaguely witty moniker foisted onto them by some out-of-town newbie. The Spotted Dog is a good example, I know where that is, if anybody had asked me where the Hop Poles was I wouldn't have had a clue.

Excellent point. The Volunteer will never be the Mash Tun to me and my local will always be the Marquis of Exeter and not The Chimney House (it's on the corner of Exeter Street, not Chimney Street, FFS). And credit to those local media outlets who have resolutely refused to talk about Brighton Pier, as the Noble Organization (a badly-named outfit if ever there was one) would have us call the Palace Pier.

On the subject of pubs, The Fountain at Ashurst and, further afield, The Trout at Godstow near Oxford - as often seen in Inspector Morse (and he and Lewis must have spent hours of valuable police time driving miles out of their way to get there), great riverside setting and very good food.

Cool, will have to visit soon, but as good as the star? You are surely a mad man!!!!!

It's a different pub to The Evening Star but the range of ales and beers equals that in the Star IMHO.

Really ?? I'm going!

I think so. I've been there 4 times and they have had stuff from the Marble Brewery, Pontiprid (sp?) brewery, Revolution brewery as well as Dark Star and others I cannot remember.

I have now got a lot of time for my local, The Prince George. They currently do a VERY nice stout.

Best pub in the world, however, is The Greys.

The Pineapple in Stockport takes some beating. The last time I went in a couple of years ago it was £1.30 a pint and 7 plays for a pound on the jukebox with some buxom blonde giving excellent head on the pint pouring.

My mate Andy Helm is co-founder and head brewer at Revolution. If you like proper beer and music then it's worth checking them out.Home - The Revolutions Brewing Company
They have a reciprocal distribution deal with Dark Star.
