From Russia With Love just squeaks in ahead of Casino Royale because:

Connery at his best - still unsurpassed.
Believable plot.
Good mix of intrigue and action / good pacing.
The brutal fight scene with Robert Shaw.
Nasty stabby footwear.
Nostalgia.

It's like Casino Royale's older brother from a less knowing time.

The rest are way way behind for me.

It's all about Odd Job (and Connery).

So Goldfinger for me. Mind you, I do firmly believe Craig is a magnificent bond, and will agree with the OP that Casino Royale is possibly the second best Bond ever.

Goldfinger by a mile. Only a few small departures from the book (probably because the hint of girl-on-girl action wasn't suitable for mainstream movies back then) and great supporting cast. Superb John Barry theme and of course the first appearance of the Aston Martin. Worst either the Man With The Golden Gun or Moonraker.

The stuff about Bond always loving and leaving the women is actually rather different in the books. At the end of Diamonds Are Forever, Tiffany Case moves into his house but eventually gets fed up with him and leaves. The woman in Moonraker (which mostly takes place in Kent in the book) rejects him completely.

Certainly nothing with Daniel Craig in it - I find him completely wooden, charmless and characterless. The stories have always unrealistic, that's fine, but they now seem to have foregone writers and just go for special effects. I have tried to watch them but not one of the DC films have I stayed awake for.

I actually thought Quantum of Solace dispensed with much of the special effects and action and really tried to get into the depths of revenge, violence and grief. On it's own it might seem a poor film to some, but taking into account what happened in Casino Royale, it shows Bond out of control, hungry for revenge, but developing through the film to completely in control agent by the end, and along side Camille Montes who has dedicated her whole life to killing Colonel Medrano, the pair reveal that revenge does nothing to bring anything back or fill any void.

Totally underrated film in my opinion. Went back to some of the early templates for Bond, and having watched it a few times, its fast turned into my favourite DC film.

Not the best Bond movie by far, but I think Moonraker is the one I've 'enjoyed' the most, probably for nostalgic reasons, and my favourite Bond villain, Jaws!

The Living Daylights always holds a special place in my heart because it is the first one I remember seeing in the cinema, but the last four have all been rather good.

Nice to see some votes for the much maligned Moore films. Man with the Golden Gun was the first proper film I saw at the cinema and I loved it, even though I think it is one of Roger's weakest movies. Spy Who Loved Me/Moonraker are my favourite duo of films and Live and Let Die is another favourite too.

That said Goldfinger, From Russia With Love are bona fide classics. I could go on.

Without doubt Bond is the great franchise in movie history. To provide so many quality films over a number of decades with new actors reinventing the character in their own image with great success is quite simply remarkable. An incredible achievement. To pick one is just not fair in my opinion.

GoldenEye.

Bungee jump. plane dive, tank chase. End of.

Definitely this but Craig is by far and away the best actor to have played Bond as the calculating killer envisioned by Flemming. I really like QOS for a lot of reasons...not least because of Bonds friendship with Mathis.

Bond is the Emperor's clothes for me but if I had to pick one it would be Octopusy. I think you understand where I'm coming from. So to speak.

I was thinking about this the other day. It was more on the lines of , if I could only keep 10 Bonds , what would they be? There have been some classics, and some stinkers. I cannot watch Octopussy or For Your Eyes Only.

Time has now passed for Casino Royale not to be fresh in my memory, Casino Royale is definatly my favourite for all of the reasons already specified in the opening post. Skyfall is a close second. I like the approach and the rawness of Bond in both those movies, as well as a certain amount of homage to the Connery era. . I remember David Arnold explaining why the Bond theme did not appear until the very end of Casino Royale. It was because Bond had to earn it , before it could be played. Love that. Prior to that, my all time favourite was always The Spy Who Loved Me. Everything about that film was just huge and full of colour. As a sixteen year old ,it was exactly what Bond should have been to me at that time.

So:
1) Casino Royale
2) Skyfall
3) The Spy Who Loved Me
4)Live And Let Die
5)Goldfinger
6)Diamonds Are Forever
7)You Only Live Twice
8)Thunderball
9) OHMSS
10) The Man With The Golden Gun

I have feeling there may be a new entry in that list very soon.

For me, Sean Connery was the best Bond, as a consequence it is either Goldfinger or From Russia With Love.

The latter just edges it for the reasons given in previous posts.

I can watch the modern Bonds but they (obviously) have nothing at all to do with the Ian Fleming books unlike the Connery Films.

On Her Majesty's Secret Service.

Faithful to the book (I love the books). Poignant.

Apparently Dr Kermode's fave Bond too, and like me he loves the Comsats

Lazenby's portrayal of Bond has probably been the most faithful to Flemming's intentions to date, although given OHMSS flopped, they quickly deviated from that with Diamonds are Forever. You could then argue that Dalton's angst ridden torn performance in License to Kill was as close anyone got to the literary Bond since Lazenby. Craig's Bond was a complete reboot effectively going back to his earliest start as a secret agent and an unabashed updating of the series to the modern world. His struggles with duty, revenge etc. are still very Flemming's Bond though.

A poll ? Nope. You're on the wrong thread.

I can't be ARSED with a poll, because any fat old Kemi can just point and click to vote, put on a stupid hat, some garish "gangsta" undersized clothes, paste it all over twitter/instagram and then just hoverboard off to another thread to type out some meaningless twattage. No no no. I'd like to know what your favourite BOND film is and WHY. That means replies.

My favourite Bond film is, without hesitation, Casino Royale. Craig completely reinvents Bond as a genuinely nasty bit of work, someone who is convincingly hard as NAILS. He's not suave, or coiffured, he's a refined thug in a tuxedo with a Double-O. It has the most sensational opening action sequence of ANY Bond film with that chase across the building site in Madagascar, culminating in the shootout at the embassy. It has an Aston Martin DB7. It has Eva Green as the filth interest. It has the best opening title sequence since the fleeting silhouetted minge in Octopussy, and a half decent theme song, which is subtly and beautifully repeated throughout the score in the movie. I think Craig brings oodles of charisma back to this character, easily the best since Connery (after the Benny Hill comic turns of Moore, the completely forgettable Dalton, and the no-hair-out-of-place yawnworthy Brosnan). Quantum and Skyfall have trailed in the wake of the mighty Casino. I'm seeing Spectre this week, I just hope it lives up to his first outing. Stop touching your EAR.

So what for you is the best Bond movie - and WHY ?

Ditto, the free running scene across the building site was awesome. Craig reinvented Bond as the man whose parking spot you wouldn't dare steal, yes a thug and merciless killer when needed but, OUR merciless killer.

Edit, but the speedboat scene through the Everglades featuring Sheriff JW Pepper in Live and Let Die is an absolute cracker.

The Spy Who Loved Me. Ticks every box for me. Great Bond theme, my favourite Bond baddie in Jaws, I loved the Lotus Esprit when it went underwater, gadgets, plenty of Roger Moore humour.

The fact that it is also Alan Partridge's favourite Bond movie is, for me, decisive.

The one where he kills lots of men and has sex with lots of women and leaves them all the next day; can't remember the name of that one though. I remember a bit of product placement in the film if that helps.

I liked it because he killed swaths of men, has sex with fit girls and wears cool stuff.

Sounds like Millwall away

Goldeneye is the dog's bollocks. Sexy Russian women, lots of shooting, driving a tank through St Petersburg, easily the best Brosnan one. It's just a shame the rest of them were so terrible. Die another day was an utter turd.

OHMSS is easily the most underrated, the pacing was a bit slow but it's still great fun to watch.
