We'll own ground maintenance. So we won't have to pay Ecovert 50% of the money we make on tickets. We do still have to pay the costs Ecovert would have had but we don't have to pay them for paying those costs. I think.
Anyone know what the detail is for the extra 2000 seats at the Western end of the Withdean Stadium? Will they be inside or outside the running track and are they for home or away supporters?
i thought all the new seats were gonna be at the eastern end, with the hospitality buildings, etc moved to the western end to make space for the new seats.
Albion Chief Executive Martin Perry has told Seagulls World that he is in the dark as to the result of the Public Inquiry into the club's proposed new stadium at Falmer.
"We still don't have any news I'm afraid," Perry told Seagulls World. "We're obviously still in touch with the Deputy Prime Minister's office, and as soon as we hear anything, we'll let everyone know. For the moment we're just waiting for the process to be completed, and as soon as they make their decision I'm sure we'll hear."
While Perry waits for news on Falmer, he is continuing to move forward with plans for an extra 2,000 seats at Withdean - due to be installed this summer, provided Albion receive planning approval for a Park & Ride site at Carden Avenue for the extra fans. The application goes before the council in March.
The Asda Supermarket chain had been the main objectors to the Park & Ride scheme, but following a campaign by users of the Albion supporters internet message board North Stand Chat and the Seagulls Mailing List last week, The supermarket have backed down and the club have opened discussions with them in a bid to overcome any concerns they have.
Perry said, "The fans again have shown how tremendous they are and how their backing is so important to this club. We're very grateful to them for everything they did last week. They made it clear to Asda that it would be very unpopular if they tried to prevent the seats going ahead."
However Perry also revealed that he felt Asda had been duped into objecting by a nearby resident who is against the extra seats being installed.
"Make no mistake about it, the argument is not about traffic or safety. It was a quite deliberate attempt by one of the local residents - a chap called Colin Hilton, who doesn't even live in Withdean - who is against the seats going in. He is anti-Albion and anti-anything that we do at Withdean.
"He wound up one of the Tory councillors, Brian Pidgeon, who went to Asda and asked them to get a petition going. However, because Asda had a new manager, they didn't fully realise the impact this would have.
"This had nothing to do with the Park & Ride. This was a deliberate attempt to stop the seats going in, for which we have planning permission from Brighton & Hove City Council.
"Asda naturally have some concerns on technical grounds, and how it will all operate. We've already met them once, and we're going to meet them again this week, and we're quite sure that in terms of traffic flow, it won't harm them in any way - but in fact [it will] make people drop in to do their shopping. I hope they do, because I want Asda to gain out of it."
Perry also revealed in the interview that the club will take full control of Withdean on matchdays - subject to council ratification in the next 48 hours - meaning they will not have to use current stadium contractors Ecovert.
"The good news for us is that as of 1st April, the contract between the council and Ecovert will end. A new deal is being finalised with a new contractor. As part of that, our deal on the use of Withdean is being re-negotiated.
"What this means is that all the stewards, events staff, the safety team will all become employees of the club, which means we'll save a great deal of money.
"It also means that things like catering and advertising revenue will come to the club, and that those sorts of income that other clubs have enjoyed traditionally - that we've never had - will belong to the Albion and will help us a great deal over the period until we get to our new stadium."
So if our understanding is right and the new 2000 seats will be for away supporters then this is not going to give Brighton supporters many more tickets for matches than we have already!
I reckon there are about 750 seats in the away block of which 375 are always allocated to away supporters, with the other half as an option for either home or away fans depending on how many they bring down. This will mean at best we get an extra 750 home tickets per match and at worst only an extra 375.
I can't see many sides bringing down 2000 supporters to the Withdean. Seems a bit of a waste of the extra capacity to me.
Why can't we just keep the away fans in the block they are currently in (seems to work quite well), and leave the new seats for the home supporters?
