What's the worst World Cup scandal of all time?

On the programme I watched last night, it was alleged that the Junta did indeed pay off part of the Peruvian national debt.

I think they may well have spent a bit more money on some of the referees - there were some appalling decisions against Hungary and France in the group games. Didn't they also get the referee changed for the final?

So Argentina basically bought the WC in 78?

Surely we have our biggest ever WC scandal here?

This. The other scandals are chicken feed compared to the current fiasco. How did Argentina manage to "delay" all of their kick offs until the other match had finished?

You're probably right but I think they were a decent side who could have won without the help - only Holland were superior IMHO.

They were a good side to watch - Kempes and Luque were on fire and, pre Maradona and the Falklands war, they were quite likeable!

And lets not forget, they denied probably the best team never to win the WC from winning it in the process!

Good thread, but surely this ends it?!

Other countries have said that England's World Cup win was - if not fixed - a bit moody.

For a start, the England v Portugal semi-final was supposed to have been played at Goodison Park, not Wembley. Joao Havelange, FIFA President at the time, has convinced himself (though he never said anything publicly until 2008) that there was an anti-Brazil conspiracy, based on the fact that the referees for the Brazil matches were either English or German, and the ref for the England v Argentina game was German.

But then, he also said that Brazil lost to Holland in 1974 because the ref was German, ignoring the fact that Brazil were mostly outplayed and pretty brutal. Holland, on the other hand, ran Brazil a merry dance.

And then there is this, in 1934... http://twohundredpercent.net/?p=6870

By no means the worst thing EVER, but nonetheless not a great moment for La Joga Bonito.

"Good evening. The game you are about to see is the most stupid, appalling, disgusting, and disgraceful exhibition of football, possibly in the history of the game"

That's the one I remember the most, probably not the worst per se in the context of some of the others but it was just so blatant from an otherwise superbly talented player, very distasteful.

That Schumacher 'tackle' runs it very close though (and obviously the physical results were a lot worse). And the 'Anschluss' match was disgraceful.
