Honestly, you could say that peodophiles probably aren't suitable babysitters and you could find somebody on NSC that would call you an idiot and say that they were.

That's ridiculous if anyone would think that, Pedophiles would be useless at babysitting.
They're more equipped for TV presenting, Rock n Roll and Politics.

I'm not actually being harsh. Harsh would be allowing the OP to carry on developing a view of the world as unsympathetic to the safety and health of his mother, without showing there are many more people who are much kinder than the perpetrator of the crime. There may even be many more people out there that would have been courageous or effective enough to respond to his mother's needs, who just weren't there at the incident. Harsh would be not offering that as a different perspective.

I think it's awful what has happened to shingle's mum. It's worthy of consideration on its own as an isolated incident without having to transform it into a reflection of the world at large.

Come on rapper? the op made a post about what had happened to his elderly mum. Your post was the one that took this to being critical of him doing not much more than saying how rotten some people are, he didn't suggest the whole world was rotten.

He certainly doesn't need someone saying he's 'harsh', he isn't. He is just expressing his feeling of helplessness as a son and that he feels unable to have done anything to have influenced whats happened. I'm sure all of us would feel just as hurt as he if such a thing happened to our mum or dad. I'm also sure we would also make a comment like he did.

"What" is a bit of a give away though.

No, because 'what' can be used like this:

What shoes I'll be wearing tomorrow:

I'm not saying he's 'harsh'. I was refuting someone saying that I was 'harsh'. When people go through traumatic stuff, such as this, I don't think it's helpful to let the (albeit understandable) development of the world as a cold, uncaring place go unchecked. Christ, I wish I was there at the incident as I would have helped the OP's mum, and I'm sure many others reading this thread are thinking the same way.

It's the people who view the world as a scary, harsh place who would be the least likely to help a stranger. The OP is inadvertently contributing to that climate by making out an isolated crime is typical of the world we live in.

People who have had a nasty shock are hardly likely to be thinking straight. Have a bit of consideration in your opinions.

Nobody will take you seriously now we know you will be wearing those shoes tomorrow!

Oh, come on, it's what Paul Weller, Bruce Foxton and Rick Buckler would have worn in 1979!

I'm sorry to read the of the incident involving the OP's Mum and hope she is now recovering ok.

But this incident also reminds me of the thought provoking advert on TV that showed someone being stalked by a dodgy looking character along a street and you thought the intended victim was about to be mugged or attacked but when the camera pulls back the stalker turns out to be a good Samaritan going to the aid of the supposed victim. It's all about the different perspectives and our prejudices / stereotypes that our minds can revert to.....

In my experience - yes there are opportunist scumbags on our streets - but thankfully there are many more punters who are willing to help someone in trouble.

Oh Rapper, you are laying a very uneasy path for yourself here. It looks from the majority that you are out of sync in this one. Op made a very understandable post, most people sympathised and you didn't, but instead of backing off you seem to be trying to justify yourself, sometimes it's best just to accept you called things a bit wrong.

One say, you may just be after a little understanding and sympathy yourself.

I'll say no more .......

Mine may not be the majority view here, but that is no reason not to express my position. Take this post from the thread:

Honestly, you could say that peodophiles probably aren't suitable babysitters and you could find somebody on NSC that would call you an idiot and say that they were.

Now I've actually worked with children that have been victims of sexual abuse from, not a babysitter, but their own father. Just as it understandable for the OP of this thread to develop a view of the world as uncaring from what has happened with his mother recently, it would just as understandable for a child victim of sexual abuse to develop a view of the world, and particular, men, or male family members, as dangerous. Understandable, yes, but inaccurate for the most part, and it wouldn't be helpful or healthy to carry that into the future as a way of viewing others. Such a view does deserve challenge. After all, this thread is evidence enough that there are many good people out there. And there are plenty more.

On a positive note. Well done to the old lady for still holding her own against the mugger. Considering she had fallen, she must of showed some spirit to then hold enough strength to prevent having her bag snatched. Well done to her x
