Not an easy question to answer as there have been loads back in the day as there were fewer of us and lack of cctv.
It started off for me pompey away mid 80s
As only Abt 16,was eating a wimpy in there shitehole town centre.Came out of wimpy there was only 4 of us and they surrounded us and we took a bit of a pasting.Fkin cowardly muppets and hated pompey ever since. A lot of northern teams mainly, Barnsley away got ambushed walking up that hill after the games.

Home Vs Arsenal evening League Cup... early 80s.... half of the NS filled with serious looking, shady Gooners giving it large,... ended up with an exit stage right, back in the South Stand for the rest of the game... pissing down with rain too.

Cardiff springs to mind. Probably about 20 to 25 years ago, getting out of the ground felt like running the gauntlet

Was that when one of their clowns attacked a 'scarfer' (Brighton fan wearing identifiable kit, away shirt etc) after the game? I was there and it was intimidating, with a baying mob the other side of the tall fence, and a load of leering recidivists off to our left in the south stand. I was with @Inkerman and his car was vandalized during the game.

As someone pointed out, Chesterfield 2000. Police decided they'd charge at us with batons raised in a side
street to keep us away from the Chesterfield lot I guess. I was only trying to get to the bloody game.

That was unpleasant, but mostly because a Brighton oaf took my first class seat on the train up, and I had to stand. Apparently it is the code for some supporters to do what they like, and f*** everyone. We didn't see any trouble but there were reports on NSC later about a bloke with his young kids being attacked. What with that and a run in I had with some other Brighton supporters over more nonsense, I eventually knocked the away days on the head a few years later.

Total chaos, to my young eyes, and I could see that my dad was visibly concerned for our/my safety.

At Millwall when we beat them which was the first time they had lost a home game in ages. Kept in for ages and then police escorted back to the tube where we jumped in a cab back to our car

Wasn't many of us in the corner that day and like you say, they hadn't lost at home for ages and we had them both sides of the fences next to us.Trust Ferguson to find his shooting boots that day

This game was ‘fun’. Back in the day when I’d watch games anywhere… mate and I fancied this, paid on the gate, in the away end. Quite lively afterwards

Yep spurs 78, I was 15, my mate and I got beaten up in the back streets a few hours before kick off.

I've got a lot to choose from, but this one really stands out. Went on the Seagull Special train. Got off at Northumberland Park station, and the first thing we saw when we got to the road, was someone absolutely smothered in blood, laying on the ground. He could have been dead by the look of him. Walking down the road to the stadium, a Brighton coach came past with hardly a window in tact, with supporters singing and shouting through the glassless windows.
No segregation, so we just joined the first queue and got in to the ground. The atmosphere was evil. You could smell it in the air. We took our position behind a goal, probably the Park Lane End where their lot congregated, and kept quiet throughout the whole game. Their chants of "We're the barmy Tottenham Army" rang round the ground. Blood-curdling. It was only us not joining in, but a few movements of the lips kept us safe.
There were just under 50,000 there for that one. Probably included several thousand Brighton supporters, but no one dared show their allegiance.
The game finished 0-0, and my over-riding memory is that of Steve Perryman running twenty yards towards Wardy who was standing by the corner-flag, and kicking him!
Got back to the station unharmed, and ended as a very unenjoyable, enjoyable day out!!

I was at that game and next to us were two of the biggest blokes I've ever seen.
They sussed out the blokes standing in front of them were Albion fans so they decided to piss all down the Albion fans backs and trousers.
We just stood there pretending we hadn't noticed what they were doing.
The two Albion fans covered in piss didn't move a muscle until halftime then didn't reappear after that.

Cardiff late 80's. virtually all of the first half Cardiff fans were being removed from our away end. loads following the escort back to the station. Millwall away and that infamous game at the Goldstone when Chelsea invaded the pitch - two police lay unconscious. They got battered in town on the Friday night.

Millwall at The Goldstone in 1977, I think Millwall had recently been on the Panorama documentary and turned up wearing surgical masks. The police put them in the West Stand terrace next to the tunnel.
I was with my dad in the North Stand but I spent most of the match watching the Millwall fans.

If I remember their attempted invasion of the West Stand seats was thwarted by a rather well dressed gent attired in hat and gloves,( other clothes were worn), who punched their hands as they tried to climb in.

Millwall away in that Playoff 2nd leg. I was on the coach coming away after the game (one of those with "Brighton & Hove" along the side in 5ft letters, nice one). Anyway, they hadn't taken the result awfully well that evening. The coach had a motorbike police escort which, for some reason, stopped us at the lights outside the Grimmest Looking Boozer in London. Out they all spilled, hurling pint glasses and anything else they could lay their hands on at the coach. Glass shattering on glass is REALLY loud.

The most intimidating thing was that there was no baying and hollering when they were inside the ground.

They weren't paying any attention to anything going on on the pitch. The ones next to the high fence you reference, they were standing sideways to it, staring at the faces of any Brighton fans daring to make contact, as if to say, "i'm memorising your face for later".

Anyway, i'm sure they were getting some enjoyment out their day out on some level

I visit Izmir every other year to see my wife's relatives. I've been following Goztepe from Izmir for over 25 years and they're massive and mental. The most terrified I've ever been when there wasn't a game occured when we were out and about and I was wearing a Goztepe polo shirt. It was suddenly decided we'd catch the ferry to the other side of the bay, the home of their arch rivals Karsiyaka (Kar-sher-yaka, literally means the other side). Goztepe once got over 80,000 at home to their rivals in a promotion game in the 1980s. Al guy came up to me on the boat and said it would be suicide going to Karsiyaka in that top. I poo, pooed him - I've been to Millwall, Leeds, Chelsea and West Ham, Pah. As we walked through a pedestrianised shopping street groups of men kept pointing at me and nodding to other groups. They then followed us. We went for something to eat and decided we'd better get back across the bay asap. I was absolutely shitting my sweaty pants. As usual I escaped in one piece.

Also the Millwall play-off I lived on Green Street and had to go home on a train full of Millwall, I slipped into the crowd and only feared my uncontrollable glee would give me away.
