Saddened by Gal Costa's death. She turned her hand to a wide variety of styles during her amazing career: from some pretty abrasive, psychedelic stuff as a member of the Tropicalia movement, through bossa nova, and into smooth Brazilian pop. Her lovely voice was a constant though. It sounds like a cliche, but the warmth of it makes me feel that she's singing just for me in a really down to earth way, even though I barely understand a word of Portuguese . I found this video wasting time on YouTube quite a few years ago, and it's really quite strange. It seems to be from an Italian TV special that Costa did in 1978, and it might be attempting to approximate a scene from Bahia, where she grew up. Anyway it's mad, quite sexy, and maybe a tad exploitative. The video quality is pretty poor, and the camera work might make you a little sea-sick: a lovely song though. Obrigada Gal.
Possibly one of the best young generation drummers in the world. Equally at home playing Fusion, Rock or Jazz and examples of each can be found on YouTube.
