To hijack this thread a little, sorry, anyone know the longest we've gone without conceding in the top flight?

I don't know whether it was the highest position, but that last 1-0 win over Liverpool in 1982 took us into 8th. place.

Downhill all the way after that, and we sacked the manager the following December. Just saying ..............

Tasty fixture at The Dell one evening that season ... S'ton expecting to go top of the league but we pissed on their parade and went up to 6th. But Baileyball was boring so we got rid and ended up at Hereford 26 years later.

Edit: the game was Tuesday night Dec 8th 1981, 22k crowd, Ritchie and Gatting scored. Slightly false position as a few had games in hand on us. Our next two games postponed but here's the league table in the programme from Dec 28th Villa (H).

Just makes you wonder how football ever managed to survive without an anointed Top 6 to fawn over.

We were 5th in the table earlier that season after a 1-0 win at Wolves on a Tuesday night, with a 25 yarder from Andy Ritchie (who also scored the winner at Anfield that season). Note the number of 'Big Six' clubs in that table. It was ****ing scary getting from the ground to the Wolverhampton that night too, locals (less than 12,000 that night) not happy.


The 8th after the Anfield win is the highest ever in the second half of the season though.

Back to Rothmans ... Stille got his goal in a different evening game that season (Tuesday Mar 2nd 1982) in a 1-0 victory over Leeds at The Goldstone

Nice to see the absence of Palace in that table.

That league is full of Midlands teams too - Villa, West Brom, Birmingham, Coventry, Wolves and the two Nottingham teams and Stoke too. Won't see all of them there again for a while...
