I swear by Jakemans throat and chest lozenges. The black ones are the best with a nice blend of menthol and eucalyptus.
If it works for Koalas it must be good!

I took one of my kids to the doctor with a nasty persistent cough a few years back and was seen by a locum who was a semi retired GP with years of experience. She confirmed the infection was viral, not bacterial and said ibuprofen and paracetamol to ease the symptoms until it goes away. I asked about cough medicine as well and she said 'It does nothing. The only thing in it that ever did anything was the alcohol that might have helped you sleep - and now they don't put any alcohol in it anyway.' I haven't bought any since. Spanish brandy still has the alcohol in it and could be useful if you're taste buds are also affected. If they're not, use French brandy - You're worth it.

Certain cough medicines sold behind the counter at pharmacies are being withdrawn over safety concerns.
Health experts say there is a very rare chance that some people could experience an allergic reaction linked to an ingredient called pholcodine.
People should check the packaging of any cough tablets or syrups they have at home to see if pholcodine is listed among the ingredients.
If it is, talk to your pharmacist about taking a different medicine.
Products containing pholcodine do not need a prescription, but cannot be bought without consultation with the pharmacist as they are kept behind the counter.

Can you still buy Pulmo Bailley? The smell and the taste are indescribably appaling. Came in a bottle that looked straight off the shelf of a Victorian chemist - next to the tincture of Laudenam.

I took it for a bad cough a few years back. I think my body is so terrified I might take it again it hasn't dared to cough since.
