Whats more tiring for a footballer?

Would it be, playing 30 minutes of extra time or playing 80 minutes of a game with only 10 men?

Reckon extra time would be most knackering.

Charlton looked as clapped out as we did - if not more so - by the end of the other night's game.

I once played almost the whole of a hockey game with ten men, it was a cup game and we weren't able to raise any subs, one of our players was injured in the first minute and probably broke his thumb. He went off to hospital and we carried on playing without him, he joined us in the bar some time later, to hear stories of the thrashing we had just received. I can confirm that it was knackering playing a whole game with too few players, I also got hit on the back of the head by the ball, something I am not keen to repeat.

On a couple of occasions I played two games, one after the other, and that wasn't as bad as playing with ten men. I wish I was still fit enough to manage that feat, it would probably kill me now!

I'm always puzzled why any fit player is knackered after 90 minutes to be honest. Why not prepare yourself so you can last the distance?

I guess it kind of depends how much of a runabout the opposition give you. Charlton allowed us to play our passing game and with the exception of Bennett and Bridcutt plugging gaps I don't think most of the lads were made to work as hard as they might have been by a team that might have really come at us and stretched us. It's often the mental thing of knowing you are at a disadvantage that makes being down to 10 more tiring.

depends on the quality of the opposition...but more often than not, playing a man short

I once played with 8 players - but I wasn't particularly knackered at the end of it - it was a subbuteo game.

Neither are anywhere near as knackering as playing a five set game of tennis on a hot sunny day and concentrating on every ball that is played.

And then doing the same thing the following day.

I reckon 80 minutes with ten men. Everyone has to work that little bit harder. I liked that Gus didn't substitute until late on. I thought that a tactical decision as much as anything. A strategy to inform the opposition that it matters little that we are one man down.

I am effing tired today by being still trapped a little in a cold and jogging for an hour this morning. I was completely spent within 18 minutes, but carried on anyway, my knees sometimes wanting to buckle and my lungs spewing bits and bobs out. A two and a half hour nap followed. Silly really. I don't know how footballers ever play with a bit of a proper cold. Maybe fitness and determination help.

Great question to be fair! I do think extra time is worse on the muscles tho...

It really does depend on the game.

If the other team are battering you then you will feel more tired than visa versa. The play could all be on the other side of the pitch to where you are playing or you might just not be getting asmuch of the ball.

I was playing football the other week on a booked court at 8.30pm. It was minus 4 degrees i would say. Normally a game comes to an end when the 12 or so people for the next game come and take it. 45 minutes is the normal time. This time, however, no one turned up so we just carried on. There is no clock on display, so it wasn't until someone grew incredibly tired after about 70 minutes that anyone wondered what was happening. We played on, of course. Free football was played. Bloody brilliant! I can't say i felt it at the time.

i would have thought players become conditioned to 90 minutes play. playing a bit harder for 80 min to cover a gap probably doesnt tire as much as having to go another 30 min. we often see in games going to extra time the cramp kicking in, top professionals with all their regimented fitness.

I think the average full time pro is as pretty much as physically fit as they feasibly can be these days, the human body does have limits!
