If you think Greenwood would help his team score more goals than Vardy despite not scoring them himself, I think its a great choice.

Personally I would have gone with Vardy. Hell, I would have gone with Vardy over Maupay, but thats not an option.

Yeh mate I'd have Vardy in as well, but the bloke has retired

Greenwood is as raw as anything and his stats don't look great. But I look at the goal he scored against us at the Amex last season, fast feet and hits it hard. There is proper talent in there. It won't appear on a spreadsheet yet but at some point that lad will burst through.

Same as Bellingham, Saka, Smith Rowe. I doubt will contribute heavily this summer, but are likely to be the mainstay of England teams for years to come. Better to have young players who won't play over old players who won't play

If you're picking players on form then Pope, Mee, Stones, Shaw, Rice and Ward-Prowse all start, however unfashionable that might be.

tokyo
Pope
Pickford
Henderson(Probably)

TAA
Trippier
Chilwell
Shaw
Saka
Walker
Stones
Maguire
one more C.D. Not Tyrone bloody Mings. Maybe Dier? He can cover as c.b and cdm...

Rice
Henderson
Mount
Foden
Grealish
Maddison

Sterling
Sancho
Rashford
Kane
Calvert Lewin

I need another central defender. I've plumped for Dier because he can cover there or as a defensive midfielder. I'm not overly happy with it though. I might add Keane too, again, I'm not desperate to do it but he's been playing pretty well for Everton. Maybe I'll go Mee or Dunk or Tarkowski instead.

I could do with another solid central midfielder too but again, can't think of one off the top of my head.

I think I'd play 4-3-3.

Pope

Shaw
Maguire
Stones
Trippier

Rice
Henderson
Mount(or Grealish)

Rashord
Kane
Sterling

The squads listed here so far highlight Southgate's biggest headache - the keeper / defence.

My view is that England's strength lies in our forward players, and therefore it is madness to play 5 at the back. We can't even agree on 3 centre backs who definitely make the squad, let alone start the matches.

I'd play 4-1-2-3 with a holding midfielder capable of dropping back into defence when the fullbacks got forward. My squad:

Keepers: Pope, Henderson, Pickford

Defenders: R. James, TAA, Chilwell, Shaw, Stones, Maguire, Tarkowski, Mee (gets nod because he is left-footed)

Midfielders: Henderson, Rice, Mount, Grealish, Maddison, Alli

Forwards: Kane, Rashford, Sterling, Foden, Calvert-Lewin, Sancho.

Far from unfashionable

I've got a feeling Mee will fall short of making the squad.
The others you mentioned should all be in and having a great chance of a lot of game time

Ergo team might be something like...

Pope
TAA (possibly Tripper or Justin if he gets fit) Stones Mee Shaw
W-P Rice
Sterling Foden Grealish
Kane

The team is never going to look particularly exciting because you simply can't play all the attacking players (we don't want a repeat of the Scholes thing again).
But that team is really solid, loads of leaders, good pace, people who can create, people who can finish- and with the likes of W-P and Grealish an INCREDIBLE amount of work rate.
It wouldn't let you down. Then you'd have the likes of Rashford, Sancho, Harvey Barnes to come off the bench.
I'd also have Maguire and Henderson on the bench because leaders and experience is important. And then you can make the rest of the squad up with anyone really.

I wouldn't even consider sockboy in the squad until he is old enough to stand up on his own. Having said that, he didn't fall down much against us (after trying it in the first minute and being told to get up) but that may be because he never turned up for the game.
I'd have Foden in the team instead of Sockboy100 times out of 100.

Southgate will most likely agree with you

But Grealish will get game time (I believe he'll have the supersub role) and it will be interesting to see if he can miraculously stay on his feet whilst in the white of England. Whilst we've got searing pace out wide it makes no sense for him to be constantly slowing the game down for us. If he does play GS should be telling him in no uncertain terms to stay on his feet

Bloody Worthing!
Pretty much sums up why I have little to no interest in anything England related. The talent pool, whilst exciting, is going to have the spontaneity and creativity drummed out of it by one of the most insipid dull managerial personalities ever.

Literally couldn’t care less [but of course enough to come on here and moan about it!]

Shame - but I think you've got a valid point.

What would El Tel Venables do with this talent?

Just look at your choices - and still a bunch of lads from championship and the Mickey Mouse league will give you a run for your money - team spirit and togetherness will out do talent (were going to do Greece 2004) and we’ve got two left backs better than yours!!
