I’ve worked with people who are incredibly rude/aggressive over the phone to people just doing their job eg HMRC staff. I loved it as they never seemed to get anywhere, adding to the beetroot faced anger.

Whereas being polite and respectful in my experience gets you a long way.
I have to bite my tongue with HMRC.
Same. I’m never rude but boy are they testing me at the moment. (I’m owed 745 quid by HMRC and I’ve been trying to get it back for almost a year now.)

If you eventually win them over, remember to remind them that as they charge interest on late payments, you expected to be treated no differently ...
