What will Scotland have left?

How do you change the booze culture of a country like Scotland? Whisky is to the Scots what wine is to the French. And the only thing that stops the French being pissheads is they have a bit of nice weather. If they weren't playing boules in the square and the wind and rain were lashing down they'd all be getting trolleyed in the auberge.

As for getting rid of sectarianism, it certainly won't happen while the Old Firm play each other 5 or 6 times a season.

When I went to university in Dundee I couldn't believe the amount of drunks passed out in the town centre, I'd never seen anything like it. When it comes to drinking the Scots are better than the English.

I have heard from one of his regular drinking companions that if Scotland reigns supreme on drinking, then Alan Brazil is the king. Apparently it's not all bluster, he really can put away a frightening amount of alcoohol, to the point where it's a waste of time trying to indulge in some macho attempt to keep pace, you'll die trying.

A slight aside from this enlightened discussion... on the BBC TMS thread, during the current rain delay, there is a discussion going on about accents and comparisons with cars.

"A woman with a Scottish accent is like a Bugatti Veyron. Good to look at, runs on refined spirit, purrs and rumbles at low levels, but you know it can go immensely insane when it wants to and if handled incorrectly it might just possibly kill you. What more could you ask for?"

It's not is it? I mean it's not. By any stretch. Glasgow is not like Beirut. You dont like it fair enough. But it is not like Beirut. And you know its not.
True. It's fair to say that religious tensions have always been evident in Beirut, but that is where the similarity ends.

Because if you make a joke about one of the other religions in the wrong area of Beirut, you're unlikely to get your throat cut these days.

Possibly not throat cut. Just shot. What a f***ing ridiculous comparison. Its nothing like Beirut for fucks sake. HE made the flippant comment and I responded and now you are chiming in with what you appear to feel is a credible point that indeed confirms Glasgow is like Beirut. It's like saying Reigate is like Damascus.

I like the way you chaps have caught your prey. It took a while for him to nibble, but eventually he's bitten and you have a nice 300lb Digsweeds Trousers flopping on the bank, gaspnig for air. Top fishing.

Well first of all, Simster mentions neither drink nor drugs, so I'm a bit confused as to your response to him.

And secondly, utter bullshit. I've made plenty of visits to Glasgow, thanks, although none since two weeks ago, and however you wish to dress it up, it a f***ing HOLE.

Where do you stay when you visit ? If you are staying in a hotel I can give you some very good recommendations. Yes I agree that it has it's problem estates on the outskirts of Glasgow like all cities, however it also has many museums and some of the finest restaurants and independent shops in the UK.

I know Simster never mentioned drink & drugs it was ME who was raising the point !

A couple of years ago I worked in Glasgow for a month, I was surprised at the lack of anti English feeling. I don't know about the suburbs but the centre of Glasgow is not bad at all.
