I'd like to be able to get to work, but work at the arse end on the Ashdown forest, no main roads, no street names light, no main drainage ets, its a bit remote where that is no chance on many cars going to dispurse the snow,
Will have to check in the morning, but getting to the stage where i want to go to work, even though i'm out at least 3-4 times a day walking the dog out of boredom i'm getting cabin fever.

Back to work, but driving doesn't look an option, so a few trains and a walk

Post workers union tried to sue us because of injury to our post lady caused by supposed problem with steps to our house. They had been in place for 25 years or more. Placed it in the hands of our insurer and heard no more. She did put on a limp whenever I saw her subsequently.

Interesting, but this has nothing to do with snow.

It's not time for the teachers to go back yet. All the snow needs to melt first. We can't take a risk of any of the staff/children falling over gettiing to/from school. The fact that the rest of us have been slipping and sliding for days getting to work and I'm foreever seeing childern falling over in the street is neither here nor there.

Why leave earlier if you don't get paid travel time?... I will leave at my normal time and if I'm late then so be it...

You don't get to leave work early so you get home in time for tea do you?...

No but you get paid for your contracted hours therefore it is your responsibility to get there. Its is not any employers fault you decide to live a distance away from your workplace. Its people like you that cost business and then wonder why there's no jobs. Twat!

Sorry, but this is an old wife's tale.

Its the same thing our company has been advised. Grit the carpark and you could get sued if someone takes a tumble as you didn't do enough to prevent it. But if you don't do anything, then you can't get sued. Hence our carpark is treacherous.

Its wrong so very very wrong. I can get 99% of the way to work safely, but the last 100 yards through the car park is bumpy skiddy ice.

My car broke down last Tuesday (bad timing or what) so i am reliant on the buses running (looking very unlikely) or i will stuggle to get to my normal place of work in Lewes.

I had to go to work in the town i live (but not my normal work location) last week but was so bored there as i couldn't actually do anything (my job is tied into my work location and cant really be done elsewhere and also i had no computer access as so many people were there because they couldn't get to their normal workplace either), so i left early but have to make up the lost hours. I don't want to go there again and either be bored for 8hrs or end up owing alot of time which i will have to make up later if i do leave early again as i am unable to do anything.

My employers give people a half day back if you are affected by severe weather (either unable to get to work anywhere, or told you can go early but a manager), but you only get that once in any 12 months, and this is the 3rd time in 12 months that snow has caused disruption (Feb 09, Dec 09 and Jan 10)

Go to work, as I did all of last week!

Lucky enough to have somewhere to park the car close ... ish to A27 and drove the 12 miles! (Had to walk one and a half miles to my parking space though!)

I believe that the idea behind this thinking comes from this:-

If you attempt to take preventative measures (in this case clearing the snow and ice and gritting the area) you are acknowledging there is a problem therefore if someone does then has an accident, they can claim that you didn't do enough to prevent it but if you do nothing, then your not acknowledging that the threat exists.

However there may be cases like this, but you never hear if they are successful or not and i feel that most of the time they fail. Media hype (used to sell papers etc) leads / adds to the myth of a Health and Safety / suing culture, but its not the case.

I think the alternative of doing nothing could also lead to people trying to sue (like the pavements not being cleared of ice and snow in the December freeze and the number of breaks and fractures people suffered from slips and trips) We will have to wait and see if anyone putting in a claim will be successful, but it could be a case of your damned if you do and your damned if you don't.

I shall start the day by driving Lord B to the station (as I did throughout the Big Snow last week) or, if the trains are totally f***ed, right to his work. After a walk with the dog I shall come home and continue making a tatter coat.
