Over paying on players fees/wages is the definition of poor recruitment.

Whilst nobody has actually said it the inference is that we didnt get that loan striker due to financial matters. PB has often said we will not be held to ransom over fees etc which obviously relate to money being the major problem.

This thread between BG and myself was about signing a striker such as Rhodes - Your post in response to mine went slightly off topic by stating we didn't plug the gap in our squad.

The gap in our squad was at full back position and it occurred due to an excessive injury list to our full backs. It occurred when the transfer window was closed and found it difficult to address - Thats the period which cost us points. We addressed it when we could with Ridgwell and our form picked up again immediately after that and we picked up more points than Middlesbrough after that.

These are the facts - End of Argument

Think the market's overheated this season? Guess what, it'll be more overheated next season. And the one after. And the ones after that until such time as the SKY bubble bursts. In the meantime, you either pay market rates, get lucky with an obscure cheapo foreign import or you get progressively less competitive. Them's the rules.

Not to mention the fact nobody is demanding a 'record signing' (although by their very nature they will be).
Nobody is talking about a squad players.
No one wants the scatter gun Derby approach.

1 specific player, is required for 1 specific position.
A position that has been needed to be filled for well over 12 months.

A 12+ month period which has seen the club do a fantastic job in recruiting all the other players needed to make that one final position work.

Spot on... shame some can't seem to accept the facts... despite our beloved manager going public on what specific player position is needed... still, I'm sure they know best (they don't)...

Fair enough... but, this mythical new striker needs to REPLACE Sam B in the 1st team, with Sam B at last being benched after season's of demonstrating his inability at our level...

There's TWO that need replacing IMHO (Elvis Manu, being a novelty act, doesn't even make the count). Ten games in, 'Sam B' only has one goal to his name, and that a pitifully squabbled-over own goal. Tomer H only has two goals to his name, both penalties. Yeah, for sure they're world class at 'running off the ball' and 'holding the ball up' . Every damn thing it would appear apart from sticking the ball in the net. Just won't do

The fact is our recruitment team identified a need (2nd striker) the summer before last, identified at least one target in the last window (I'm sure multiple targets, they aren't that inept), but self-evidently failed over 3 windows to land said target... that is, they FAILED to have a successful window, despite PB shouting from the rooftops what a success the last one was... it wasn't... to reiterate, they failed in the one area they PUBLICLY identified they needed to succeed... get it?

Your defence of the indefensible is, in one way, admirable, but just comes across, ultimately, as sucking up to the club, or swallowing the PB BS whole and without question...

You've also changed your tune, being sure, as the summer progressed, even after the Alex P story, that we would sign a striker, because we needed one... now, performing a Thatcher-esque pirouette, and seeing no real need to worry...

The problem is that replacing him will cost a fortune - we wouldn't be able to sell him for anything worthwhile, and a replacement guaranteed to be any better would cost at least £5m, probably nearer £8m. So whilst I'd rather we had more potent strikers, I'm happy enough with the investment we see in other areas of the pitch which have made us very competitive in this division.

We offered £7m for Alex Pritchard, and very nearly got him. So I guess that's (nearly) how...

I've no idea. But from this quote i interpreted it as the club not willing to over-pay for players that won't strengthen the squad "just to add numbers" but willing to pay on players that would.
The type of bids rumoured on here from good sources and of course Pritchard indicate that this is the case.

PS: the last and only time i've ever met with my paymaster; Paul Barber - i stood next to my Dad who had a good humoured row with him about why he couldn't get a lift up to the top of the WSU because he has a stick and finds it hard to walk (he's nearly 80). Barber was very helpful about it.

You have done it again. You have changed the subject. We were discussing last years failure in contrast to Midlesbrough's success and now you have jumped into this season and compared my views to Chris' views. Incidentally, I share a lot of the same views

Last year [B]Chris brought in the strikers he wanted. Zamorra was prone to injury and James Wilson never really filled the potential Chris thought he might have.

I know Chris wanted another striker this year. Indeed I even know one of the ones he would have liked but it did not materialise for a few reasons and he had to live with that. Instead of spending money just for the sake if that the funds were retained and he is going with what he has because the squad is not a bad squad.


None of us on here know why the strikers we went after didn't materialise. It could have been for many reasons and we can speculate all we like, we can never really know
That should leave us more funds for the January window which could work out better in that he may even be able to afford an even better quality striker then
