I was super-f***ing-good.

Coaching a football team, partying, talking long walks (hours and hours) to visit abandoned houses, making money through writing about football, had a very hot girlfriend (my first, and I was useless in that regard...), had a band, did a lot of creative things.

Not a worry in the world and completely disinterested in how things worked in "normal" society meaning it was literally impossible for me to feel embarrassed or have any limits to how I functioned. Fully free.

If I had continued on the path I was on when I was 18 I would have ruled the world today. But I smoked it all away instead... it is what it is.
Did you suck your teeth and rub your nose before answering a question?

Nope. I didn't have a lot of cameras shoved in my face so I don't think I developed any manager tics. Did not compress myself like Pep does, did not rub my nose like GP does, did not look into the ceiling or wall like RDZ does, didn't sit and fiddle with a pen or something like Fergie used to do. But if I had to attend a couple of press conferences in front of a bunch of scavengers trying to turn everything I say into shit, yeah I'd (probably unconciously) would develop some strategy to make myself feel comfortable.

I'd been in the Royal Navy 2 years. Grew up very quickly. Been in the Falklands war a year earlier, gave me a different perspective on life. Partied hard and fast for the next 25 years...Slowed down a bit now.

Footballing ability aside, I find Ewan Ferguson’s level of maturity and confident but relaxed demeanor quite staggering especially for an 18 year old and especially in his position.

I have come across other similar youngsters (in completely different walks of life) who match the outlook and attitude of Ferguson but it still amazes me when I compare myself at this age. I’d broadly hatched a plan to move to London but this was it…I was still very wet behind the ears back then.

How about you? What were you like at his age?
Hmmm... I was a hormone and weed fuelled, wannabe footy hooligan, just started work in London, was watching the Albion in the old 1st division home and away.... Lancing Square... West Street... Maytree, Merry Monk..... general juvenile carnage... my mother loved me at least.

This time of year, 46 years ago? a wormy student who had discovered the Damned, Peter Hammill and the Stranglers?

I stood in front of a mirror and cut my hair with a pair of scissors till it stuck up, short and spikey.

I applied some black eye liner.

I stepped out into the night, in drainpipes, with a packet of Camel, and a brand new derring do, and derring f***ing did.

The rest is history.

I was a Springsteen bore. Born To Run had just been released and … oh, I’d better stop there.

On the ocean wave
1 year in to my 26 years in the RN. Drinking far too much, following the Albion home & away as much as I could. Scared shitless of approaching attractive girls in pubs & clubs, unless drunk, which I know now is a waste of time!
Wish I'd saved a few quid & got a mortgage on house in Lewes. Imagine?

A good A-Level student, but not quite good enough for Cambridge where I had an interview but got rejected. Went to the Zap on a Friday night and the pub on a Saturday night but generally well behaved and possibly a bit boring.
