It may surprise some of you to know that the majority of the youth of today do all the things listed above, and it is in fact only a small minority of youngsters who get involved with rioting and the like. Just saying.

Coffee bars bars at the time were like teenage pubs with Juke boxes and there were loads of good ones in Brighton.
Plus in those days we had a basic 48 hour working week, that made it late when you got home from work anyway.
Also the last buses home were between 11 and 11.15 in those days.

Oh and a bit of "Garden hopping" just as it's getting dark,go though peoples back gardens, bit like the Grand National style,no thieving,or intentional damage, just try not to get caught-admit by the time your half way through 20 gardens with cuts to hands and face it does get a little scary,as you have no option but to continue, getting weaker and weaker you get to the last garden, where, stood in the back garden is Basher bill,6 ft tall, swigging larger,no top on.

On near hands and knees, you summon up the last of you energy,as you realise he's seen you,in his garden, and you think,shit-a burst of energy is found and a lifetime of charter is built as you survive to tell the tale.

Kids today-no character.

Agree-although that small detail you mention "minority" as each year passes, and the lad is on his 10th asbo, nothing getting done-it does tend to grow.

And let me guess, you don't feel any need to riot do you?

Too idle... I remember back in the day, we (KingTafariLove) were a prime target for the Brighton drugs squad. We were playing down at Queen Annes at the bottom of West Street, and we were all standing outside watching a huge fight over at the Kingswest... spotted one of our antagonisers and couldnt resist pointing out we werent violent because of grass...the bastard actually agreed...

When I was in my early teens...Gnome-napping in Mile Oak was popular.

Had the threat of my Farthers belt if i stepped out of line-hard but fair did not need to use it after the first couple of times....made my own fun.

Hard in London i would imagine if your a lad or lass, who does live on a large estate, and do not want to be part of the gang culture.

What do they do?

As a moden day youth, i would say from personal experience - if dad hit me, even with a belt - hed get it back as hard if not harder.

My generation has learnt not to be scared of parents as we can easily fight back.

Parents...the police...its all the same- authority figures that dont assume the worst of you, so you may as well prove them right.

Not that I approve of any of the rioting, that being said. I can just understand why its happened.

We probably could have hit back just as hard as you and it was not a case of being scared it was called respect for parents and Police. That is sadly lacking these days.

So the solution is to bust out all the marijuana they've seized and airdrop it on affected areas. Or just throw a few bricks in a burning car and let passive smoking do it's thing.

If you were belted at the age of 6 7 8 then you would know not to step out of line-that said kids that age today are not punished and even have mobiles, rooms tidy'd by parents, and go on holidays abroad, none of which i had-

My parents put the fear of christ up me when it came to the police & how disappointed they'd be if i got into any sort of trouble.
Maybe i was naive but i saw the police as an authority figure you shouldn't mess with.
My teenage years were mostly spent watching football, Playing on my playstation & working.

i used to love going out "garden hopping" .....once did a street with 2 others of about 14 back gardens......a big rush for any 13-15 year old for sure. advice: start off with front gardens to get warmed up.
