Great start to the season
the first of five wins on the trot and unbeaten til their 9th game of the season

At first sight it would appear to be Bristol City 1 Brighton & Hove Albion 2.

But I wasn't born until about 6 hours after the final whistle. So put me down for ...

Brighton & Hove Albion 2 Reading 0

I just found out that I started going to games regularly a season earlier than I thought. Check out thus sequence of three consective home results in that season (1985)...

Brighton 5 Bradford 2
Brighton 6 Carlisle 1
Brighton 3 Chatlton 5

Now THAT is FLAIR! I remember that all our midfield and strikers scored in the 6-1 and that Keown played upfont in the 3-5 - stillone of the best games i have ever seen

The first Albion result was apparently an unspectacular 1-1 draw with Luton. But what interests me more though is not that result, but it looks like there were three games played in three days from 13th-16th April 1979! Including two days in a row! Why on earth would that happen? I can understand fixture pile ups, but either the fixtures in those days were very poor, or Soccerbase has recorded this incorrectly!

English Division 2 (old) Brighton 2-0 Charlton 13-04-1979
English Division 2 (old) Cardiff 3-1 Brighton 14-04-1979
English Division 2 (old) Brighton 3-0 Bristol R 16-04-1979
English Division 2 (old) Luton 1-1 Brighton 21-04-1979

Haven't had time to look through to see if anyone has already explained but this would have been an Easter and it was not uncommon to play Good Friday, Sat & Easter monday.. In later years some of the monday games moved to tuesdays. Easter was often a 'make or break' time of the season and very exciting with big crowds.

That Luton game was quite fiesty with a fair bit of trouble. We salvaged a crucial point with a rare maybank goal and soon after clinched promotion.

I was born in July 57 just before the momentous season when we finally got promoted out of the old Div 3 (S). As there don't (according to Carder/Harris) apear to be any recorded pre season games the first after I was born was a 1-0 away win at Gillingham on 24 August. Scorer Peter Harburn, crowd 11,249.
