I'm a great believer in sport keeping kids out of trouble. I worked in a council run youth club for 16 years, two evenings a week. I coached volleyball and had a decent team going.

We spend a fair bit each year on various kits for youth sport in the firm belief that all the time they are playing sport they are not getting up to no good.

I loved running a team from Under 7 to Under 16, won more games than we lost, had a lot of fun on the way, but all these years later the biggest achievement was, by their own admission as they thank me and the mate who ran the team with me every time we see them, is that we kept two lads out of trouble through football and ultimately out of prison.

Surprised by how much this moved me. It would be great to say the team won tournaments or the league every year but this is truly something to be much more proud of. Well done.

Saw something shocking a couple of months ago. My lad has just joined a new Saturday team alongside his Sunday team. They have moved to 11 a side so there are a few new signings. One kids Dad rocked up ten minutes into a game, turns up and said “oh for f@£ks sake, why is he playing at the back, I hate him there. He’d joined to play there as that’s where there was space.

He then proceeded to slate every single thing his own son did for the rest of the game. Final result, 4-0 victory. They’ve conceded 2 goals in six matches so far and luckily, that’s the only game he turned up to. Poor kid.

Still the youth coach rather than a Dad. Thankfully the Dads in main team I lead include 8 or 9 nationalities so they chat in English but generally any outbursts don't spread and are just met with bemusement and a slightly embarrassed kid who needs a brief kind word. In the main I find the Dads to be very polite, measured and reasonable and just happy their kid is playing football.

Some of the overprotective, spoilt Mothers are insane though!
