What the hell is happening to the Pound?

Didn't think we had any exporters left! Is someone still out there making stuff in the UK?

Isn't whisky just about Britain's biggest export business? They must be loving it north of the border.

This is all clearly Gordon Brown playing up to Scottish voters.

Not enough. However, we are still the 7th largesat manufacturing country in the world according to a recent FT article (within the last 306 months I think).

The problem with our economy is that it has been built on illusions. In defence of GB & TB, the view by most analysts was that our financial servies were the future, and they bought into it. Much as I am very anti GB, I don't think the 'credit-crunch' crisis would have been different if the Tories had been in power. However, wat would have been vey different was the relative level of debt (both official and hidden), which we are now burdened with.

The first thing I would do is get rid of the incompetent and mendacious individuals who have presided over the economy for the past 11 years.

In a period of strong economic growth, they have fuelled huge national and personal levels of debt for their own short-term political gain, they have failed to rein in the excesses of the banking and investment systems, and all the while claiming to have been 'prudent' and 'abolishing boom and bust'.

They have been a deep-seated disaster for this country - and should be hounded from office at the earliest opportunity.

It might not solve the economic crisis - but I for one don't want Gordon Brown to remain in charge to further drag the economy into the spiral of debt and despair that he is presiding over - as one thing is certain, he will continue to deny his responsibility for the depth of our parlous state and therefore fail to make the politically tough decisions that are needed.

That isn't a solution. None of that would give an economic benefit, lessen the impact of the recession, or indeed bring us out of it.

I'm not an apologist for Labour, I've never voted Labour in my life, but there is a hell of a lot of stick flying around with no-one actually offering any solutions. I, for one, am at least pleased that our Government are prepared to try to lead us out of this. Right or wrong, they are trying to do something about it, while most of Europe appear to be hoping it goes away, while the US were only saved by the Senate from making an almighty hash of it when Bush wanted to under-write all of the sub-prime debt.

Then become one!

Labour will become relatively cheap over here due to the increased supply, and the demand for our products from overseas will greatly increase because of the competitive advantage the cheap pound will give us.

My Belgium trip in the new year is going to be expensive now. Most beers in bars are 3 to 3.5 euros for a bottle or 330 draft.
I wont eat, that`ll save some money.

You'd be surprised how reasonable the prices are in the Kulminator (in euro terms). Plus, they don't serve any food beyond a bit of cheese and salami, so that'll help.

With the pound reaching parity with the euro it means that when the euro is adopted house prices will be roughly the same pre and post changeover.

get rid of the pound and convert to the euro?

Good call.

Also, most of europe is a lot cheaper than rip-off Britain. A holiday in europe will still be cheap....just not as cheap.

Ah the cheese. We had an incident amongst our group in T'Beerje in Brugge last year with a plate of it and a coctail stick after one of our party got greedy and plunged in just once too often.

pssst..... do international business, competing with other currencies, and see what happens.
UK business is very attractive on the international market now.
Even selling stuff on eBay, you will likely see more foreign bidders and they'll be spending more than you expected.

See, when Thatcher had the pound at 1.05 against the dollar, she was also reaming the British working people, and those bright-eyed first time house buyers who were foreclosing due to a rising interest rate.

Under labour the interest rate has been falling, while the Germans bemoan the fact that they are not as competitive on the international front.
So, the German chancellor is critical? GOOD, if no-one was pissed off then Brown would be doing something WRONG!
