What should English people be proud of?

I think pride is the wrong word. Can you technically be proud of something you had no input into? Admiration is probably a better word.

Depends on level of association.

Proud the BBC and the NHS made a few of your lists. Not a socialist but it tend to work better in quite a few areas including broadcasting and health systems.

Quite, said it many times but how can you be proud of something that people who coincidentally were born in the same country as you, did. Admiration and a slight sense of joshing style banter with people from other nations, nah. Likewise I'm not ashamed that we were involved in the slave trade, it wasn't me, or us, it was the ruling classes of the time.....

Just a couple of things, off the top of my head (I'm sure there's many more):

Literature
the BBC
ZX Spectrum
Morris Minor
language (the most flexible, universal and common sense language in the world, and quite easy to learn too)
football clubs
tolerance and open-mindedness
the Beatles

I've never been to Great Britain (I prefer warmer countries for holidays), but all the things mentioned above allow me to think very kindly of your country. Long live the UK! Or whatever is the usual ejaculation (if 'ejaculation' is the word I want) on such occasions.

In London village.
England has given birth to some of the greatest writers, dramatists, painters, film makers, musicians, sports people, tailors. engineers, scientists, inventors and comedians in the world. I don't know about pride but I am certainly grateful for that.
